X-Men's Weirdest Villain Gets Surprising Redesign From Marvel

As a lifelong X-Men enthusiast with a heart full of memories from countless comic book adventures, I must say that the latest redesign of Mojo in NYX #2 has truly left me awestruck! Growing up, Mojo was always that quirky, jelly-like villain who seemed more comical than menacing. But this new design – with his cybernetics, armor, and spiked tail – has turned him into a formidable force to be reckoned with!

The X-Men team often faces an unusual array of adversaries, ranging from malevolent mutants such as Magneto and Apocalypse to antagonistic groups led by humans (Orchis) or robots (Sentinels). It’s worth mentioning that the X-Men series has not shied away from exploring cosmic conflicts, encountering various bizarre alien threats throughout their journey. With the comic book series “From the Ashes” reboot of X-Men underway, one of their most peculiar interstellar enemies is receiving a striking new makeover!

SPOILERS FOLLOW!

In the comic series NYX, issue #2 continues the tale of Laura Kinney, alias Wolverine, and Kamala Khan, known as Ms. Marvel, each pursuing separate yet intertwining investigations into the ominous new perils that young mutants in New York City are encountering. Kamala has been hot on the heels of the anti-mutant organization, the Truthseekers, while Wolverine has taken up the task of locating the gang that’s been snatching numerous innocent mutants from the streets, all at the behest of a secretive figure called “Mr. Friend.”

One encounter with an alleged “victim” reveals that the missing mutants aren’t being abducted – they are seeking out assistance from Mr. Friend, via his lieutenant, a mutant named “Local.” Laura goes “undercover” as a “Scratch” a petty criminal and makes contact with Local, asking to meet the boss.

In the local area, Laura is subjected to a series of criminal trials, which involve stealing a vehicle and executing a daring robbery at Empire State University. These activities lead to an opportunity for her to meet with the boss, but it turns out that this person, whom she knows as “Mr. Friend,” is someone who the X-Men have had frequent encounters with…

X-Men's Weirdest Villain Gets Surprising Redesign From Marvel

It is revealed that Mr. Friend is actually the X-Men antagonist, Mojo. He’s been manipulating a human (or possibly a mutant) body as his own puppet. Mojo has come to Earth to develop a “mutant growth hormone” and monopolize it. Wolverine tries to fight Mojo, but Laura discovers that this grotesque overlord is far stronger than he appears; with his massive size, fierce attacks, and cybernetic upgrades, Mojo comes close to burning away Laura’s flesh and forcing her into retreat. In the final scene of the comic, Wolverine acknowledges she needs assistance, and heads back to reunite with Kamala, Anole, Sophie Cuckoo, and others to confront Mojo once more, this time with reinforcements.

Mojo, traditionally portrayed as a recurring antagonist with characteristics like destiny, yellow, and slug-like resembling Marvel’s Jabba the Hutt, underwent a design transformation by NYX. Now, he sports cybernetics, armor, leather wristbands, and a long, spiked, cyborg tail, making him appear more dynamic and intimidating. The battle with Wolverine and his grotesque manipulation of “Mr. Friend” as a puppet have never made Mojo seem more terrifying or formidable than he does now.

NYX is on sale at Marvel Comics.
