Will Jurassic World: Rebirth Acknowledge a Fan-Favorite Franchise Spinoff?

As a seasoned gamer and Jurassic Park franchise enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the dinosaur-filled universe, I can’t help but feel both intrigue and anticipation upon learning about the upcoming installment, “Jurassic World: Rebirth.” With my memory brimming with events from the original films and the animated spinoffs, it’s exciting to see how these timelines will intertwine.

The Jurassic World series continues to thrive, with a fourth installment directed by Gareth Edwards scheduled for release next summer. On Thursday, Universal revealed that the movie will be called Jurassic World: Rebirth, and shared some initial photos and plot details. Notably, the storyline hints that Rebirth takes place five years after the events of 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion, focusing on a group of characters attempting to retrieve DNA from Earth’s largest surviving dinosaurs. This intriguing twist has left fans wondering if Rebirth might touch upon the storylines presented in the animated spin-offs, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and Jurassic World: Chaos Theory.

The animated series “Camp Cretaceous,” broadcast on Netflix from 2020 to 2022, centers around a group of teenagers who find themselves stranded on Isla Nublar during the events of 2015’s “Jurassic World.” Over its five seasons, this group, known as the “Camp Fam,” form a close-knit family and confront a variety of dinosaur and human perils. Eventually, they manage to leave the island. The latest series, titled “Chaos Theory,” premiered on Netflix this year, taking place six years after the previous series. It follows the Camp Fam as young adults who come together to investigate a suspected murder within their ranks.

According to Scott Kreamer, who shared this before the premiere of “Chaos Theory,” the original plan was for the series to take place five years following Dominion. However, due to production delays, the time gap expanded to six years instead. Consequently, the first season of “Chaos Theory” unfolds a year after the events depicted in “Rebirth.” This timing presents an intriguing twist on the idea from “Rebirth,” where Earth was said to be largely unsuitable for dinosaurs except in isolated equatorial regions. Interestingly, by the time depicted in “Chaos Theory,” dinosaurs were shown to have spread across much of the United States a year later, but let’s save that topic for another discussion.

In the first season of “Chaos Theory”, the Camp Fam reunites after moving on with their lives separately. This suggests that not all the original cast may appear in live-action in “Rebirth”. However, it is possible that “Rebirth” might reference “Camp Cretaceous” and “Chaos Theory” subtly. For instance, there could be a passing mention of the children who were saved from Isla Nublar, or elements like the dinosaur dark web or dinosaur therapy could be introduced as background details. This would not only strengthen the connections within the Jurassic franchise, but also give due recognition to the long-running spinoff series.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on July 2, 2025.
