Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Winona Ryder Recalls False Starts Leading up to Sequel Actually Being Made

As a long-time fan of the original Beetlejuice movie, I can honestly say that the anticipation for this sequel has been a rollercoaster ride spanning three decades. But when Winona Ryder, the original Lydia Deetz, spoke about the making of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and how they had to wait for Jenna Ortega to grow up to play Astrid, it felt like fate was finally aligning for this beloved film.

Waiting for a follow-up to the classic film “Beetlejuice” was an extended period – precisely 36 years – and it wasn’t just movie enthusiasts who held out hope for more. One of those hopefuls was actress Winona Ryder. In a conversation with ComicBook, Ryder shared that there were instances where she felt optimistic about a “Beetlejuice” sequel but also believes that the release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” opening in theaters next week, was meant to be because they needed to wait for the right individuals to arrive – specifically Jenna Ortega, who portrays Astrid Deetz in the highly anticipated sequel.

Rider expressed that on numerous occasions, he had high expectations only to be disappointed, but it felt destined or fated. He came to understand that we needed to wait for Jenna to be born and mature before she could join the team perfectly, as if she was the missing piece of a puzzle. She turned out to be an exceptional addition, just like Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci. In essence, he considered them a dream cast.

The rider expressed joy as well, mentioning that the opportunity to bring “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” to life had long been a cherished aspiration of hers. She emphasized her eagerness to experience “each and every instant” of the project.

Ryder expressed, “I felt intensely alive in every instant. I made a point to savor each moment because it felt like a dream come true, something I didn’t want to miss for anything. It was extraordinary to be with the people who mattered most to me, and this experience has been particularly meaningful compared to others. As a child, they were incredibly inclusive.”

She went on to say, “Tim and I shared a strong connection, and it was incredible how he managed to replicate that feeling, even with all the excitement building around us. It felt as if we were still secluded from any studio intervention, which could be a tribute to our skilled producers. The experience was liberating and inspiring, making us feel like, ‘Let’s give this a shot!’ because I trusted him so implicitly; I knew he wouldn’t use anything that wasn’t effective.”

Jenna Ortega Met Michael Keaton in Full Beetlejuice Makeup

In a recent interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Ortega shared an interesting tidbit: she encountered her Beetlejuice co-star, Michael Keaton, for the very first time when he was fully made up as the character Beetlejuice.

Ortega stated, “He appeared from behind when I was undergoing a trial run for my hair and makeup, giving me a gentle tap on the shoulder. Startled, I turned to find it was just a jump scare. He introduced himself as Michael, but his face was covered in peeling mold. I tried to act nonchalant. However, things seemed normal until I encountered him again, outside of hair and makeup, because I had forgotten that we’d already been introduced.”
