As a die-hard fan of the original Beetlejuice, I must say that watching Catherine O’Hara reprise her iconic role as Delia Deetz in the sequel is an absolute delight! It brings back memories of the first time I watched the film, which incidentally was also the last time I had seen it.
It still pays to have cable TV, especially if you’re reprising a beloved role in the highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel and you haven’t watched the original in ages. Okay, that’s a very specific example, but it’s exactly what happened to Catherine O’Hara before she began filming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
During an interview with ComicBook about Tim Burton’s upcoming sequel, O’Hara admitted that she hadn’t revisited the original film where she played Delia Deetz. Coincidentally, Beetlejuice happened to be on TV one day, and O’Hara found herself watching the entire movie. Surprisingly, this viewing greatly influenced her performance in the sequel.
“Four or five days before my trip to London for filming, the show was on TV, but I hadn’t seen it yet. I had planned to watch it, but didn’t get around to it. Eventually, it came on TV, and I found myself standing there, watching it. This reminded me of how fast I used to speak, which was beneficial as for several years I had been portraying a slow-speaking, methodical character. Watching the show helped me make a change in my delivery and avoid sounding like any other character. It also brought back memories of what an amazing experience it was.”
Among the stars reprising their roles for the upcoming “Beetlejuice” sequel is Catherine O’Hara. Michael Keaton will continue as the mischievous title character, while Winona Ryder returns to portray Lydia Deetz. The new film also introduces Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s daughter and Delia’s granddaughter. Joining this cast are Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Danny DeVito.
Ryder expressed his feelings about returning to the set of Beetlejuice after over three decades: “I felt incredibly immersed in every moment. I made sure to savor each one because it’s like a dream come true, and you just want to be fully present for every single, literally every single instant.” He added, “Out of all the roles I’ve played, this is one of the most special experiences to be back with these people who meant the world to me. They set such a high standard as actors when I was young, and they were incredibly inclusive.”
She went on to say, “Tim and I shared a strong connection, and it was incredible how he managed to replicate that feeling, even amidst all the excitement or expectation. It felt as if we were back in our original setting, with no studio interference. This could be a tribute to the talented producers, but it also gave us a sense of liberation, inspiration – a moment where I thought, ‘Let’s give this a try, just for the fun of it, because I trust him so implicitly. I know he won’t use anything that doesn’t work.'”
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hits theaters everywhere on September 6th.
