As a lifelong Star Wars fan who has grown up with the saga and its expansive universe, I am beyond excited for Marvel’s new era of publishing Star Wars comics – particularly The Battle of Jakku! After years of following the adventures of our beloved characters in the gaps between films, it’s time to bridge the gap between the Original Trilogy and Sequel Trilogy.
It’s now time for Marvel to embark on a fresh chapter in their Star Wars comic publishing journey. Over the years, readers have thrilled to the escapades of characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and more, as portrayed in Marvel’s diverse Star Wars comics that filled the narrative gaps between films from the Original Trilogy. Now, Marvel is preparing to connect the dots between the Original Trilogy and Sequel Trilogy through a series called The Battle of Jakku. This epic story will span three limited series, with the first being Insurgency Rising. Fans can now catch a glimpse of the thrilling events unfolding as The Battle of Jakku commences.
In this exclusive sneak peek, ComicBook presents the first issue of “Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising” written by Alex Segura, illustrated by Leonard Kirk, and colored by Stefano Raffaele. The narrative continues after the epic events of “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi“, with the Empire weakened and the Rebellion aiming to deliver the decisive blow. The story unfolds as a Rebel pilot locks horns in an aerial battle with Imperial TIE fighters, while Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2D2 steal a tranquil moment amidst the Ewok forest. Here, Han and Leia share a tender kiss as Leia chooses to remain behind with Luke.
At the grave site of Darth Vader, Leia is present, and the ominous aura of Vader’s black helmet looms. Luke and Leia converse nearby, while an unscrupulous Imperial general lurks. In the background, you can see images of Emperor Palpatine discharging lightning bolts from his fingers and the Death Star just moments before it was destroyed in “Return of the Jedi,” hinting at trouble ahead.
It’s incredibly humbling to have the chance to share this untold tale in the Star Wars saga, working alongside numerous talented artists, within the three BATTLE OF JAKKU limited series, as Segura stated. Our narrative will be vast and encompassing – it will feature all your favorite characters, along with some fresh, intriguing elements to add to the lore. We aim to provide readers with a ringside view of the climactic battle of the Galactic Civil War, but we’ll also reshape the consequences of the Battle of Endor and introduce a new, ominous adversary that will keep our protagonists on their toes. Our objective is to ramp up the intensity and ensure this journey holds its ground alongside other tales from that era. As the Empire disintegrates, a fresh wave of darkness emerges!
