Having followed this series since its inception, I’ve grown accustomed to the post-apocalyptic chaos, the quirky characters, and the relentless pursuit of ever more powerful weapons.
Earlier this month, we got a sneak peek at Borderlands 4, and now, Gearbox Software is sharing even more details about the upcoming Borderlands game. Since PAX West happens to be taking place this weekend, it was an ideal platform for Gearbox to unveil some fresh concept art for the game. The team behind Borderlands 4 also took the opportunity to discuss the concept art and offer insights into what direction they’re aiming for with Borderlands 4 at PAX West.
Four distinct concept illustrations, all centered around Borderlands 4, were unveiled during Gearbox’s presentation at PAX West. These areas depicted in the art aren’t definitive locations as they are merely examples of concept art. This means they might undergo changes or even be abandoned before the release of Borderlands 4.
In line with what Borderlands enthusiasts might have anticipated, the post-apocalyptic settings are here to stay in Borderlands 4. The team behind the latest Borderlands project, who spoke during PAX West, affirmed this while expressing their desire for novelty. However, they emphasized that the new planet setting for Borderlands 4 offers an ideal chance to refine the formula.
In terms of Borderlands 4, while it involves technology to some extent, it’s not all about cutting-edge, high-tech landscapes. Compared to previous Borderlands games, there seems to be a greater emphasis on technology, as suggested by the developers. However, they’ve mentioned that the world of Borderlands 4 could be filled with repurposed tech, which aligns with the post-apocalyptic, scavenge-what-you-can themes that are characteristic of the Borderlands series.
Fans of Borderlands will observe that this time around, the game world is brimming with vibrant hues instead of just barren deserts as usual. However, it’s important to note that we’ve seen color in previous Borderlands games too; but what makes this one stand out is the developers’ emphasis on “an abundance of colors and advanced technology in this world compared to any others.”
It’s currently unknown when Borderlands 4 will officially launch, but it’s slated for a 2025 debut.
