As a long-time fan of the Call of Duty series, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia with the announcement of Black Ops 6. The return to the traditional method of unlocking weapon camos is like a breath of fresh air, taking us back to the good old days when grinding for cosmetics wasn’t tied to weapon level requirements.
In October, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will roll back a contentious gameplay aspect that has been present in recent Call of Duty (COD) titles. Given the numerous Black Ops and overall Call of Duty games, one would expect a consistent experience from one release to another. However, due to the involvement of multiple studios, things often shift. This inconsistency is even noticeable between Treyarch games. Consequently, it might not be shocking that the series struggles with deciding how to handle unlocking weapon skins.
Lately in Call of Duty games, they’ve made weapon camouflages only accessible after reaching maximum weapon levels. This necessitated players to level up their weapons extensively before they could even start working towards those weapon camos. However, this change has now been reverted back to the way it was previously. Essentially, gamers can now begin earning weapon camos without having to reach a specific weapon level first. This is something that almost every player had been eagerly waiting for. Needless to say, Call of Duty fans are thrilled about this return.
It’s yet to be determined whether Treyarch will use other strategies to keep gamers engaged, as the maximum weapon level system served primarily as a means to encourage continuous play, essentially acting as an affordable player retention strategy. Without it, we’ll be curious to see if they adjust anything else in their games to compensate for this change. Additionally, we’ll be intrigued to find out whether this approach will persist or if it becomes unique to Treyarch’s game series.
