PS2 and OG Xbox Game Is Gone Forever in Less Than 24 Hours

As a seasoned gamer with a rich history of playing games across various platforms, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and a tinge of sadness as the clock ticks down on the availability of The Suffering and its sequel. These games were part of my early gaming years, and their unique blend of horror and shooter elements made them stand out even among the crowded landscape of 2004-era titles.

In just under 24 hours, a classic game from the PS2 and original Xbox era, along with its sequel, will no longer be available for purchase. While these games have been hard to find on their original platforms, except for the second-hand market which necessitates owning a functional PS2 or original Xbox, they could still be bought on PC through GOG. As of September 1st, this option will disappear, making it extremely challenging and potentially costly to acquire these games in the future.

The pair of games are The Suffering and its sequel, The Suffering: Ties That Bind. The horror meets shooter games have both been discounted for the occasion from their normal prices of $9.99 to just $1.99 via an 80 percent discount. That said, time is obviously running out to buy them.

If you haven’t encountered “The Suffering” before, let me fill you in. This game first appeared in 2004, developed by Surreal Software and published by Midway Games. Initially, this horror-shooter was exclusive to PS2 and Xbox consoles, but it made its way to PC later in the same year. Critics gave it Metacritic scores between 77 and 80, depending on the platform, and it managed to sell 1.5 million copies. The positive response led to a sequel, which was indeed produced the following year.

In 2005, “The Suffering: Ties That Bind” was launched on the same platforms and by the same development duo. It garnered review scores similar to its predecessor, although slightly lower, but it seems the sales were not strong enough to warrant a continuation of the series beyond the second game, where it concluded. As time passes, it appears increasingly unlikely that the series will be revived. If it does resurface, it would likely be under the ownership of WB Games.

The Suffering

“Live through the fear as you struggle to break free from a top-security prison swarming with grotesque beings. Your frantic attempt to flee this nightmarish jail and the encompassing island is just the start of discovering the reality behind The Suffering.”

The Suffering: Ties That Bind

“Confront Your Inner Ghosts. The metropolis harbors its own monsters… and so do you. An unavoidable adversary haunts Torque, tormenting and pursuing him relentlessly, even as he strives to cleanse the streets of wickedness. The sinister core of the city can seem like a cell. Can you break free from your own shadows?”
