In the world of board games, Everdell has earned a lot of affection, and there are numerous methods to amplify the enjoyment via expansions. This is ideal for those who wish to deepen and complicate the core experience, but what about individuals seeking an approach that preserves the richness while being accessible to younger players? Enter Tabletop Tycoon, Starling Games, and Asmodee with their latest offering, Welcome to Everdell – a self-contained introduction that mirrors the charm and strategy of the original Everdell, yet designs an adventure that invites children and newer gamers to actively engage in the game rather than merely observing.
What Is Everdell?
In Everdell, players aim to construct a bustling Woodland metropolis by hiring new residents (all depicted through captivating illustrations of charming woodland creatures) and acquiring cards that grant extra resources and final scores. You’ll achieve this by deploying your workers in various zones to gather resources necessary for welcoming new characters and establishing new locales, all within a game board brimming with intricate artwork and visual appeal.
In Everdell, although some aspects have been streamlined, the core essence remains intact. I didn’t mean it was scaled down, as the gameplay hasn’t been made simpler in any way. Instead, you’ll find more compact options that play out quicker within a smaller timeframe. As always, during each round, you’ll deploy your three workers on the board and pick among the Fort Builders (Beavers), Doctors (Owls), Farmers (Pigs), and Heroes (Foxes). These vibrant characters are brilliantly illustrated by Andrew Bosley and Jacqui Davis.
Key Differences
Instead of building a village, you’ll be focusing on crafting the optimal Fort. You’ll gather resources, acquire cards, and strive to score the highest points before the Moon moves across the game board. Additionally, this game offers a quicker playtime compared to Everdell, with sessions lasting roughly 30 minutes as opposed to 40 to 80 minutes for a full game of Everdell.
The main distinction lies within the game’s mechanics. Everdell is designed for players aged six and above, but my four-and-a-half-year-old daughter managed it easily. This is due to two optional features you can employ at the start of the game, which we utilized during our initial playthrough. These options grant each player an opening bonus of one Resin, one Twig, and one Berry – these are the resources used throughout the game for purchasing cards, thereby unlocking further choices and scoring points.
Additionally, in the beginning, you’ll find a pair of Captain and Fort cards included in your initial collection. These cards come into play during the Gather Goodies phase, which is where you collect resources from green cards before anyone else takes their turn. Having these cards gives you an immediate advantage, as you can start with four resources right away. This means you can dive straight into making strategic decisions and expanding your area without having to devote a whole turn, or even two, solely for resource gathering.
The design team aims to develop a game that both you and your children can fully engage and delight in playing together. They take into account shorter attention spans, and by incorporating charming visuals, reduced playtime, simplified mechanics, and easy-to-grasp gameplay, they ensure new players feel like they’re understanding the game rather than just going through the motions. My daughter and I have played numerous games together, but with Welcome to Everdell, I barely needed to adjust any rules or mechanisms, and she was eager for another round immediately after finishing.
The Perfect Entry Point
Here’s the thing though, it’s not just for younger ages. When I say it appeals to all fans, I mean it. I don’t always have 2 hours to jump into a game, but more often than not I can find 30 minutes, and Welcome to Everdell provides a thoroughly entertaining experience in that small timeframe. It’s also not going to break the bank. While the core Everdell is $70, Welcome to Everdell comes in at $25, and that’s pretty hard to beat.
