Deadpool & Wolverine Crosses $600 Million at Domestic Box Office During Slow Labor Day Weekend

As a lifelong Marvel fan and someone who has waited eagerly for every superhero movie release, I must say that the success of Deadpool & Wolverine is nothing short of exhilarating! Breaking through the $600 million domestic mark is no small feat, especially in today’s competitive cinema landscape. It’s like being a kid on Christmas morning, unwrapping my favorite action figures one by one!

Previously announced, Deadpool and Wolverine were anticipated to lead the box office during their sixth week in cinemas and reach another significant milestone. As expected, the Marvel Studios film emerged victorious over the Labor Day weekend box office. It has now surpassed $600 million domestically, joining an exclusive list of 16 films that have managed such a feat within the U.S. Though Deadpool and Wolverine had a strong weekend, overall box office performance was sluggish.

Similar to how Memorial Day weekend this year was quiet for theaters, Labor Day weekend also showed a slow period for cinemas. The films Deadpool and Wolverine collected an extra $15.2 million during the weekend, with estimates suggesting they could make up to $19.5 million through Monday’s holiday. The combined total of Deadpool and Wolverine now stands at $603.8 million in North America and a staggering $1.25 billion worldwide.

Apart from one new release, all of the top five box office earners this past weekend were films that had returned to theaters. The movie that came in second place was “Alien: Romulus”, which brought in an extra $9.3 million during the weekend, with estimates suggesting it will reach a total of $11.5 million by Monday’s holiday. As of now, the Alien film has grossed a domestic total of $91 million and a global total of $283.5 million. In third place was “It Ends With Us”, which earned an additional $7.4 million this weekend (estimated to reach $9.5 million by Monday). This romantic drama has currently made $135.8 million in North America and $283.7 million globally.

4th on the box office chart is the new biopic “Reagan,” featuring Dennis Quaid as the former president. It made $7.4 million, with an estimated total of $9.2 million by Monday. In 5th place was “Twisters,” which returned to 4DX theaters, adding $7.1 million to its tally (estimated $8.7 million as of Monday). After being in theaters for seven weeks, “Twisters” has made a domestic total of $259.6 million and over $351 million globally.

Other recently launched films started off with rocky beginnings. The sci-fi horror film “Afriad” earned $3.7 million in its debut (projected to make $4.4 million by Monday), while “1992,” starring Tyrese Gibson and Scott Eastwood, opened to $1.3 million (anticipated to reach $1.65 million by Monday).

At the moment, “Inside Out 2” is leading as the top box office earner this year. Keep an eye out for future news regarding its earnings in 2024.
