‘Jason Donovan is a musical theatre genius’: Mawaan Rizwan talks Rocky Horror

As a devoted fan of musical theatre who has spent countless hours belting out “Sweet Transvestite” in my living room, I am thrilled to see Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show return to the West End stage. However, this time around, it’s not just the iconic Frank-N-Furter that has me excited – it’s the debut of Mawaan Rizwan as the narrator!

This weekend marks the start of a new West End run for Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show, with the esteemed musical theater icon, Jason Donovan, playing the role of Frank-N-Furter.

Prior to the famous musical “touch-a, touch-a” arriving on the London stage, we had a chance to chat with comedian and Taskmaster graduate Mawaan Rizwan, who will be making his debut in musical theatre as the narrator.

1. “Jason is fantastic, and I’m really enjoying his portrayal of the character. His creative, artistic decisions are truly innovative, and it’s fascinating to watch him bring these ideas to life.”

He continued: “It’s his own thing, which I think audiences will really love.”

More recently, Donovan reinterpreted Dr Frank-N-Furter, a role made iconic by Tim Curry in the 1975 movie, at the Theatre Royal Sydney, receiving exceptional critic acclaim.

However, it’s been more than 25 years since the Neighbours actor last donned his iconic fishnets for UK viewers, making this upcoming role particularly significant and challenging.

Yet, Rizwan held great faith in Donovan, whom he referred to as a “theatrical musical prodigy.” He shared that the entire cast was cognizant of the significance of the production.

“The Rocky Horror Show stands on its own as a unique entity. It’s a challenging task to strike a balance, as we aim to respect the elements that fans adore while simultaneously injecting fresh ideas into it.”

“It seems that the iconic moments from the original are still present, but the actors, due to their individual personas, bring a distinct and fresh interpretation to them.”

I shared that my interpretation of the narrator deviates slightly but delightfully from the traditional, offering an enjoyable twist within the long-established boundaries.

The comedian hinted at a lot of audience engagement from his side, which he referred to as the most enjoyable aspect when taking on the role of the narrator.

Each evening promises an unique experience for me. Engaging directly with the audience and not knowing what surprises may come is incredibly thrilling for me, particularly given my history in stand-up comedy.

Starting this coming Friday, the 6th of September, all the way through to the 20th, you’ll find Rizwan gracing the stage in “The Rocky Horror Show” at the Dominion Theatre.
