As a long-time admirer of Sir Ian McKellen’s illustrious career and unparalleled portrayal of Gandalf, hearing the news that he might reprise his role in an upcoming Lord of the Rings film has filled me with an overwhelming sense of elation. His dedication to the craft, even at 85 years old, is truly inspiring.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share the news that venerable actor, Sir Ian McKellen, has hinted at reprising his iconic role as Gandalf in an impending Lord of the Rings movie! Contrary to whispers suggesting he might be hanging up his acting hat after a recent stage mishap, it appears that Gandalf’s adventures are far from over.
The well-known actor, currently aged 85, took on the role of Gandalf in the movie adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which were all helmed by director Peter Jackson from New Zealand.
In the upcoming spin-off movie, Jackson is taking on the role of producer, with Andy Serkis directing. The film will primarily revolve around the beloved character, Gollum, and will see a reunion between Serkis and Wētā Workshop for the visual effects creation process.
In a conversation with The Big Issue this past week, Sir Ian McKellen hinted at his potential return to the role of Gandalf in “The Hunt for Gollum,” scheduled for cinema release in 2026. He mentioned that he has received word “Gandalf will be involved” and expressed hope that he would reprise the character.
This morning, on BBC Breakfast, he expressed his excitement about the concept by saying, “I’d prefer to be the one wearing the pointed hat and beard, if possible.”
Concern arose significantly over the actor after he fell from the stage while performing “The Players King,” an innovative adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Henry IV: Parts 1 and 2” at the Noël Coward Theatre in London this past summer.
The occurrence led to both wrist and neck injuries, causing significant emotional turmoil, yet McKellen firmly stated that his hiatus from acting would be temporary, ending by the close of the year, with no hints of impending retirement at this time.
He added: “I shall just keep at it as long as the legs and the lungs and the mind keep working.”
In May of this year, Warner Bros made official that Andy Serkis will be both the director and main performer in “The Lord of the Rings: The Search for Gollum”, a project they previously announced.
During a subsequent conversation with Deadline, the seasoned motion-capture actor was queried if any of his fellow actors from the initial trilogy – for instance, McKellen – might make an appearance in the upcoming production.
He said, “I’m not ready to make any decisions at this moment.” In essence, things are too fresh… We’ve only begun brainstorming about potential storylines and character development, and haven’t even decided on the specifics of where and how the character’s narrative will unfold.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is headed to cinemas in 2026.
