As a die-hard fan who has grown up with the magical world of Middle Earth, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming Lord of the Rings films! The news that Gandalf the White will return, played once again by the legendary Ian McKellen, is simply heartwarming and a testament to the enduring appeal of this beloved franchise.
For more than two decades, Peter Jackson’s extraordinary adaptations of The Lord of the Rings have graced our screens with box-office triumphs and multiple Oscars. Now, exciting whispers suggest the return of Middle Earth with two brand-new Lord of the Rings movies!
In a new development, Andy Serkis has been tapped to direct not just one but two upcoming films. The screenplay for these movies is being penned by familiar hands – Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who previously collaborated on the script for the original trilogy, are joining forces once again. Additionally, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, known for their work on “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” as well as Peter Jackson himself, will also contribute to the writing process. Jackson will produce these films too.
It seems that Gandalf the White may make a comeback, with Ian McKellen set to reprise his role as confirmed by statements made to The Big Issue. He stated, “The enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of waning… I can’t disclose any more than that. I’ve simply been informed that there will be additional films and Gandalf will feature in them, and they hope that I will portray him again.”
2025 marks the expected start of filming, with a release scheduled for 2026. Sir Ian McKellen, who turns 86 in 2024, will be taking a break that year due to an accident on stage in London. He’s currently recovering and is optimistic about resuming work next year. In his own words, “I don’t know exactly when, but the script isn’t written yet, so they had better hurry up!”
The initial trilogy amassed an impressive $3 billion globally. With its final installment, “The Return of the King,” setting a record by winning 11 Oscars across all categories it was nominated, this achievement was truly unprecedented. It shared this distinction with Titanic and Ben Hur from 1959, both films being remembered for their remarkable milestones – like Titanic’s iconic line, “I’m the king of the world!” by James Cameron.
