As a die-hard fan who has been following the Marvel and DC universes since their early days, I can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store with the recent news about potential crossovers between the two powerhouses. The idea of Chris Pratt, our beloved Star-Lord, joining the DCU under the guidance of James Gunn is nothing short of exhilarating!
We’re yet to officially witness the launch of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe with December’s Creature Commandos, but fans are eagerly waiting to see how this universe will evolve. One major question on everyone’s mind is whether characters from Gunn’s Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy films might appear in the DCU as well. At present, only Sean Gunn, who played various roles in the Guardians series, has been confirmed for the DCU, portraying Maxwell Lord, Weasel, and G.I. Robot. In a recent conversation on Threads, Gunn himself hinted that he and Chris Pratt, who played Peter Quill/Star-Lord in the Guardians series, are still discussing the potential of Pratt joining the DC Universe.
“He’s a close friend,” Gunn answered. “We talk about that all the time.”
Will the Guardians of the Galaxy Cast Join the DCU?
Since Gunn took over at DC Studios, fans have been advocating for specific Guardians of the Galaxy cast members to land certain DC roles. For instance, they’ve suggested Chris Pratt as Booster Gold, while also proposing Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, for roles like Bane or Hugo Strange. During an interview with ComicBook about his work on The Garfield Movie earlier this year, Pratt mentioned that either possibility could happen and he might even show up in both superhero franchises.
In the conversation we had (which you can view above), Pratt expressed that it might be more logical for him to reprise his role as Star Lord again. However, he added that anything could happen, especially with James Gunn now at DC. There might be an opportunity suitable for him over there, or even a chance for both. In fact, Pratt suggested the idea of playing both roles simultaneously, stating it’s completely possible in his opinion.
What Is On the DC Universe Slate?
Back in January 2023, Gunn and Safran unveiled that the first lineup from DC Studios would feature Superman in 2025, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026, as well as films like The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority (with no specific release dates yet). They also announced HBO Max TV shows such as Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series. It’s been suggested that a live-action Teen Titans movie and an animated Jurassic League movie are in development at DC Studios, although these projects have not been officially confirmed.
2023 saw James Gunn clarifying that while he learned a great deal during his time at Marvel, the upcoming project is not simply Marvel 2.0 as some might think. He emphasized their differences, stating that they’re crafting a major, expansive narrative similar to Marvel, but more carefully planned out from the get-go because they have a team of writers working together to fully develop the story. Additionally, he described the project as having elements reminiscent of both Star Wars and Game of Thrones, with a universe featuring various time periods, locations, and characters that possess a greater moral complexity.
