Deadpool & Wolverine Reveals Closer Look at “Zenpool” Variant

As a long-time comic book enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Deadpool from his humble beginnings to the Merc with a Mouth we all know and love today, I must say that Jonay Bacallado’s work on Zenpool is nothing short of breathtaking. The attention to detail in capturing the essence of this unique variant is truly commendable, especially considering how relatively obscure he is compared to other Deadpool characters.

Illustrator Jonay Baccalario has been posting several images from his “Deadpool & Wolverine” collection on social media, and over the weekend — as the movie itself regained the top spot at the box office and surpassed $600 million domestically — he posted a glimpse of Zenpool, one of the many Deadpool personas that appeared in the film. Zenpool is an intriguing character, since he isn’t a variant of Wade as depicted in the comics, but an alternative costume and identity used by Wade for a short period of time. Due to the AXIS crossover in 2014, Deadpool was one of several characters whose morality was reversed by a powerful spell, transforming him into a tranquil and serene Buddhist. Of course, he eventually got “better”…well, “better” might be overstating it, but he got to be Deadpool again.

Despite the comics being quite recent, Zenpool seems to be one of the more enigmatic members of the Deadpool Corps, as he was absent for quite a short time in the source material and also isn’t immediately recognizable like Lady Deadpool or Babypool, where it’s clear “Ah, that’s just the same character, but a woman and a baby.” You can observe Baccalao’s artwork below.

Baccalao clarified that “Zenpool” was among the numerous options they considered for the movie. It’s the only choice without much red in its attire, which symbolizes tranquility, grace, martial arts expertise, and a Tibetan monk. He embodies everything that the original Deadpool character stands against. Mayes aimed to depict him during his daily routine.

In the Marvel movies “Deadpool” and “Wolverine”, Ryan Reynolds’ character will significantly impact the plot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by working together with Hugh Jackman. This movie also introduces Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, and so on, as well as returning characters like Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Lauren Shuler Donner take on production duties, with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. The writing team for Deadpool & Wolverine includes Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine made its exclusive theater debut on July 26th.
