Slow Horses star reveals he was going to quit acting before getting cast

As a seasoned critic with a penchant for spy dramas and a soft spot for actors who have experienced their own transformative moments in the industry, I must say that Slow Horses has certainly proven to be one of the most intriguing and rewarding shows to grace our screens in recent years.

Although Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, and Kirstin Scott Thomas are widely known as the main stars of Slow Horses on Apple TV+, it’s essential to acknowledge that this gripping spy series is truly an ensemble production.

Among the original cast members of the series, we find Rosalind Eleazar, Saskia Reeves, Jonathan Pryce, and Christopher Chung. As we gear up for season 4, Chung has shared that landing a role on this show was a pivotal moment in his acting journey.

At a BFI screening of the initial episode, in conjunction with TopMob, Chung was queried about what particularly appealed to him regarding the series prior to being cast. He responded by expressing his desire to collaborate with Gary Oldman.

In a recent gathering, I received the necessary scripts, and it seemed we had emerged from isolation. This was my first encounter post-isolation, and it felt strange due to everyone wearing masks. However, for about 10 minutes during taping, I was permitted to remove my mask so others could see my face. Little did they know, Chung quipped!

He continued: “And then I let it go, and then two weeks later, the call came in. But I think I was at my wit’s end with acting. I think I was gonna take a break from it. Then this came and turned everything around and changed my life.”

In the fourth season of the series, several fresh faces join the team: Tom Brooke, Joanna Scanlan, Ruth Bradley, and James Callis.

Hugo Weaving has also joined the series, playing villainous figure Frank Harkness.

Speaking candidly about his character, Weaving described him as “exceptionally skilled yet unconventional.” This individual possesses advanced intellect, but he’s also independent-minded, operating outside the norms, and devoid of sentimentality.

He can be harsh, yet there’s an undeniable charm about him. This season, his sophistication really shines through – making him an urban, polished individual. However, beneath this refined exterior lies a dangerous edge, both physically and metaphorically speaking.

“There’s always a looming danger from him. I believe he’s quite a formidable adversary. He often hints at his threat, but keeps most of his moves hidden. This character is more like a slow-building tension throughout the season. However, if you’ve read the books, you know that Frank has a life and actions beyond what’s shown in this book.”
