As a long-time fan of both anime and live-action adaptations, I must say that my heart skips a beat every time Netflix announces a new project. The recent chats with Gordon Cormier about Avatar and One Piece have only fueled my excitement. The unique dynamics between Aang and Luffy, as portrayed by these talented actors, is a testament to the power of good storytelling.
Netflix specializes in transforming animated content into live-action adaptations. Although not all attempts have found an audience, “One Piece” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender” have become two of the most watched series on their streaming platform, regardless of adaptation status. Recently, we at ComicBook had the chance to discuss with Gordon Cormier about the success of “Avatar” and its promising future. Interestingly, during our conversation, Cormier expressed what he admires most about Inaki Godoy, the young actor playing Monkey D. Luffy, as he prepares to reenter the world of bending.
The upcoming second season of “One Piece” is set to debut before the arrival of “Avatar: The Last Airbender’s” season two”. Presently, and currently in its production already showcased several actors who will be joining the Straw Hats as they travel to various locations like Drum Island, Loguetown, and Little Garden among others. In a similar fashion to “One Piece”, if “Avatar’s” second season adheres to its source material, the main storyline is likely to unfold in the Earth Kingdom, where Aang will hone his earth-bending skills.
Avatar x One Piece: Grand Bending
At this year’s Dragon Con, Gordon Cormier and I discussed our chat. In this conversation, Aang (the live-action version) spoke about his friendship with the live-action Luffy. It was quite surprising when he mentioned that Cormier enjoys Godoy’s social media game, stating “I adore Inaki. He’s outstanding. Every year on his birthday, he posts the same photo with the same caption, but changes the number. This peculiarity is fascinating to me. If I had known about it earlier, I would have liked it more intensely, similar to a level 11.”
Continuing the discussion about social media, Cormier expressed that his Instagram was a clear indication that the live-action Avatar was successful. He recalled, “A month after Wednesday was released, I believe I watched it, and suddenly, there were all these posts on Instagram. Wow, this thing is really taking off, everyone knows it. However, with Avatar, it was different. My Instagram literally exploded, but that’s the only sign I needed to know if it did well or not. So it was quite intriguing.”
