Boruto Crew Explains Why the Otsutsuki Had to Return

As a die-hard fan of the Naruto universe, I can wholeheartedly affirm that the decision to reintroduce the Otsutsuki Clan as major antagonists in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations was a masterstroke. The original series left us wanting more from these intergalactic bad boys, and it’s clear that writer and artist Mikio Ikemoto felt the same way.

In the world of “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations,” I, as a dedicated fan, found myself reacquainted with the Otsutsuki Clan as the central antagonists for the continuation of the Naruto saga. The creators behind this captivating series disclosed their rationale for resurrecting them for the latest installment.

In a special fan event, Mikio Ikemoto, writer and artist of the Boruto franchise (based on Masashi Kishimoto’s original Naruto manga series), revealed that the Otsutsuki Clan would play a significant role. He mentioned this because they didn’t have much time to develop them in the initial series. In fact, when Ikemoto experimented with other antagonists, they didn’t seem as compelling as the Otsutsuki Clan.

Why Boruto Brings Back the Otsutsuki

In the anime Naruto, Ikemoto pointed out that the origin of the Otsutsuki clan wasn’t clarified initially. However, from his perspective, they were extraterrestrial beings right from the start. Post the Great Ninja Wars, we ventured into the cosmos to seek fresh adversaries. We experimented with other human characters, but the outcome was not compelling. So, according to Ikemoto, he and Masashi Kishimoto probably explored various concepts for antagonists, yet it was the Otsutsuki Clan that appeared to offer the most compelling villainous aspect.

The Otsutsuki lineage has been instrumental for Boruto, but not just by providing formidable adversaries throughout the series, but also by enriching their own and the franchise’s lore in the process. Boruto is grappling with a significant countdown as the Otsutsuki power increasingly dominates his body, and this development will unfold during the time skip sequel, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, as well.

In the most recent installment of the series, they’ve deepened the concept of the Divine Tree by introducing more adversaries, which undeniably strengthens the Otsutsuki Clan’s role as antagonists, enhancing the overall appeal of the franchise thus far.
