As a lifelong Trekkie and a self-proclaimed member of the “Red Shirt Brigade”, I can hardly contain my excitement for Star Trek Day 2024! The partnership with Code.org, DoSomething.org, and Outright International aligns perfectly with the inclusive and optimistic spirit of Star Trek. It’s not just about sitting in the captain’s chair – it’s about using that position to make a difference.
Star Trek Day is fast approaching, marking the television premiere of the original series on September 8, 1966. This year, the franchise is teaming up with Code.org, promoting computer education for grade-school students; DoSomething.org, inspiring youth activism; and Outright International, a global initiative for LGBTIQ inclusion and equality, to launch the campaign “Take the Chair, Make an Impact.” This worldwide effort invites fans to embody the optimistic vision of a brighter future and contribute to the diverse Star Trek community that has been cultivated over the years.
This year’s digital event focuses on inviting fans to imagine themselves as captains aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, pondering a thought-provoking question: “If I were steering towards the future, what choices would I make?” Fans are encouraged to discuss this theme online at StarTrek.com. From September, 25% of all Star Trek merchandise sales within the U.S. will be contributed to the mentioned charities above.
2024’s Star Trek Day will include interactive pop-ups for fans to enjoy, allowing them to physically take the captain’s chair, capture memories through photography, obtain a customized ticket, and receive an exclusive enamel pin with a limited edition.
