Google Drive is finally coming to Windows on Arm

What you need to know

  • Qualcomm has announced during its IFA 2024 press conference that another big gap has been plugged with support for Windows on Arm.
  • Later this year, Google Drive will be updated for native ARM64 support on Windows, allowing Snapdragon X series laptops access for the first time.
  • This follows Google’s recent update of the Chrome browser to support Snapdragon-powered laptops.

As a researcher with a keen interest in technology, today feels like Christmas has come early! The announcement by Qualcomm during its IFA 2024 press conference that Windows on Arm now has support for Snapdragon X series, has long been anticipated. It’s not just another step towards mobile-first computing, but a giant leap for desktop computing as well.

Today brings exciting news from Windows on Arm as the same event sees the launch of the new 8-core Snapdragon X Plus, and it’s also confirmed that a popular app is set to join the platform

Instead of saying “No, it isn’t the long-awaited arrival of Adobe Premiere Pro,” you could rephrase it as “Actually, this isn’t the much anticipated release of Adobe Premiere Pro.” And for the second part, a possible paraphrase is “On the other hand, it might be more beneficial to a larger group of people.” This maintains the original meaning while making it easier to read and understand

This year, Google Drive will receive an update that allows it to run on Windows operating systems based on ARM architecture, as reported by our source, Zac Bowden

As a researcher, I find this development quite significant. It follows Google’s recent update of the Chrome browser on Windows to natively support ARM64 architecture. While Google Drive can certainly be accessed via a web browser, the desktop application offers a more practical experience for heavy users

Once installed, this software becomes part of your system like OneDrive does, enabling you to access files, back up folders, provide offline access and similar functions, all from within the standard Windows File Explorer. It’s simply more convenient, so I’m grateful that Google has finally made it happen. Personally, I prefer using Google Drive over OneDrive, so I’m happy to see a barrier to an ARM future is now removed

Today, Qualcomm announced not just one piece of news, but rather two: firstly, the launch of the Snapdragon X Plus variant; secondly, the debut of devices incorporating this technology from ASUS and Dell. Lastly, we were given a hint that it will be featured in high-performance desktop PCs in the near future

With the impressive performance of the first-gen Snapdragon X series chips, the future certainly looks promising for Windows PCs at this moment. As a third competitor enters the market, competition often fosters innovation. And I’m rooting for its success
