As a lifelong fan of Batman and a connoisseur of comic book adaptations, I am beyond thrilled with the revelation that The Penguin is serving as the bridge between The Batman and The Batman Part II. It’s like a delicious appetizer before a sumptuous main course. The interconnectedness of these stories, from the script penned by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, to the return of Colin Farrell’s Penguin, promises an unparalleled journey through Gotham City’s underbelly. I can hardly contain my excitement for the Batman sequel shooting in early 2025, especially when we hear tantalizing hints like “details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins.”
Following the disclosure by “The Penguin” showrunner Lauren LeFranc that the HBO series serves as a link between “The Batman” and “The Batman Part II”, director Matt Reeves verified that the subsequent chapter in his “Batman Epic Crime Saga” will bring back Oswald “Oz” Cobb, played by Colin Farrell. This sequel, set for release in 2022, also introduces Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne in his second year as a crime-fighting vigilante. The reboot positions the Dark Knight against early criminal masterminds such as Penguin, Riddler (Paul Dano), and Catwoman (Zo? Kravitz). A brief appearance by an imprisoned Joker (Barry Keoghan) is also included in this storyline
In a recent interview for October’s edition of SFX Magazine, Reeves confirmed that Colin will feature in the upcoming movie and shared that he and Mattson Tomlin are finalizing the script they’ve been working on together. According to Reeves, there’s a lot of enthusiasm from DC and the studio about the script, and production for the Batman sequel is still scheduled to start early next year, 2025
In the upcoming limited series, The Penguin strengthens his control over Gotham City’s criminal realm following Sofia Falcone’s father’s demise. This leads to a power struggle between them, with the outcome shaping the city’s future. Notably, this eight-episode run serves as an introduction to The Batman 2, directly tying into the series’ conclusion
“Reeves hinted that certain elements from the upcoming movie will seamlessly tie into its start, and the way Oz joins this world once again as we pass the torch to Batman, who is currently investigating another case.”
Reeves continued by sharing that his crime-focused works across multiple films and shows serve as an exploration of why Gotham has become the city it is, with its harsh environment and the lives of its residents. He and his team are trying to uncover the reasons behind these circumstances
In the upcoming sequel to “The Batman”, it was revealed that Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro) and his connection to the Waynes are at the heart of a conspiracy. Reeves, the director, mentioned that this story will delve deeper into wider-spread corruption, taking us to unexpected places not anticipated in the first film. “The roots of where this story leads were already planted in the initial movie,” he said. “It explores new facets of Batman’s character that we haven’t seen before. Batman is always fighting against these corrupt forces, but they can never be completely vanquished. So, the sequel will dive deeper into this ongoing struggle.”
As a fervent fan, I can’t help but notice some intriguing hints that could potentially unveil the identity of the villain in this upcoming Batman film. In the first movie, Riddler exposed a hidden deal, the so-called ‘Hush-money agreement’, between the late Thomas Wayne and a gangster, leading to the murder of Gotham Gazette investigative journalist Edward Elliot – a name strikingly similar to Tommy Elliot, a suspected Batman villain
One potential villain that can be ruled out is the supernatural terror Gentleman Ghost, who recently appeared in the unconnected Reeves-produced animated series Batman: Caped Crusader.
As a fan, I was thrilled to see how Reeves aimed to bring these iconic pop figures, these universally recognized mythical characters, into our realm. We’re not planning to dive headfirst into the fantastical, but rather keep things grounded, pushing the boundaries just enough to make Gotham feel real and tangible. Rest assured, you’ll still recognize your favorite characters, that’s exactly what we’re aiming for. Unfortunately, the Gentleman Ghost might be a stretch too far for us, but we’re excited about finding a creative way to introduce characters that hint at the fantastical and make it relatable
“The television series titled ‘The Penguin,’ featuring Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Michael Zegen, Carmen Ejogo, and Theo Rossi, will make its debut on HBO and Max on the 19th of September. On the other hand, ‘The Batman Part II’ is slated to hit theaters on October 2nd, 2026.”
