As a long-time fan of sandbox games with a penchant for procedurally generated content, I can confidently say that Core Keeper has become my new go-to game following its 1.0 release. The Early Access period was pivotal in shaping this title, with community feedback playing a significant role in refining mechanics and expanding the game’s content.
Following a lengthy stint in early access, “Core Keeper” has now been fully released and is accessible to console gamers as well. It’s safe to say that this title, which was already perilously addictive, has grown even more so post its 1.0 launch. With the addition of new areas to discover, new adversaries to confront, and entirely new game mechanics to master, “Core Keeper” has expanded significantly since leaving early access. To delve deeper into these updates and uncover what lies ahead for the game, we recently spoke with Fredrik Präntare, CEO and game director at Pugstorm. The interview with Mr. Präntare can be found below
NOTE: This interview was conducted prior to the game’s 1.0 release.
During the Early Access phase, Core Keeper‘s development was significantly impacted. We received valuable input from the community, which directly affected major design choices. This feedback helped us fine-tune mechanics and add more elements to the game, thereby enhancing its overall content
Has the Early Access stage positively impacted the progress of Core Keeper? Was the input and discussion from the community instrumental in significantly shaping the game’s development path?
During the Early Access phase, Core Keeper was substantially molded. Our design choices were heavily impacted by community feedback, helping us fine-tune mechanics and enrich the game with more content. The game’s triumph enabled us to extend its reach extensively. Interactions between players and the game offered priceless insights, especially in terms of balancing and determining priorities for updates
As we drew near to version 1.0, our attention turned predominantly towards perfecting the main gameplay progression, but we didn’t forget to elevate the overall gaming experience – right from the early stages up to the late stages. This refinement encompasses the incorporation of a wider range of items and tools, as well as the introduction of new locations for players to discover. Our aim is to ensure that the adventure in Core Keeper remains intriguing and captivating at every turn. We are confident that the enhancements brought about by version 1.0 will deepen and broaden the gaming experience, making each stage of progression more fulfilling
What new content and features can players expect in the 1.0 release compared to Early Access?
The initial version 1.0 is jam-packed with novel content and innovations, significantly expanding the gaming experience. Players should eagerly anticipate delving into uncharted territories, like The Passage – a unique biome brimming with experimental aspects. We’ve also incorporated new tools, resources, and crafting opportunities to foster greater creativity and tactical gameplay, offering magic and diverse playstyles. Moreover, players will face off against brand-new adversaries and bosses, while encountering fresh storyline elements that deepen the game’s backstory
Will players’ progress from Early Access carry over into the 1.0 release?
During the 1.0 release, all Early Access realms will transform into what we’re referring to as ‘Traditional Realms’. After the 1.0 update, Early Access players can still access their Traditional Realms; however, for an optimal experience, it would be advisable to start a fresh game because most of the 1.0 content won’t be available in Traditional Realms
“The 1.0 release is packed with new content and features that expand the game in exciting ways.”
In this 1.0 version, we’ve made our debut on gaming consoles. Compared to developing for PCs, what was the unique experience in creating a game like this for consoles?
Creating Core Keeper for consoles introduced unique hurdles and advantages. One major distinction was fine-tuning the game to guarantee a steady and high frame rate on various hardware configurations, ensuring a seamless experience across all platforms. These difficulties also provided chances to polish and optimize the game, which has benefited the PC version too. We’ve boosted visuals with better graphics and lighting, including the use of path tracing without needing an RTX graphics card, while raising frame rates for everyone
Are there any specific developments or updates you can share about the game’s upcoming phases? Will players continue to receive fresh content after the 1.0 version launch, or is there more to anticipate in terms of game expansion?
Although our primary goal is to ensure a top-notch 1.0 launch, we’re dedicated to providing ongoing support for the game Core Keeper even after its release. We view version 1.0 not as the final destination but as an essential stepping stone. The ingenuity and passion of our community never cease to amaze us, and we look forward to expanding upon the game’s base. The journey in Core Keeper is far from complete—we can’t wait to discover where it leads us next!
