The gripping show, Dead and Buried, can now be streamed completely on BBC iPlayer, with quite a few viewers nearing its surprising ending
The series, modeled after the stage production titled “Bag for Life,” chronicles a woman’s growing fixation on the individual responsible for her brother’s murder, as she learns that he has regained freedom from prison
Michael (Colin Morgan), after serving his time, constructed a fresh existence, establishing a family and a profession under the wing of his father-in-law
Instead, Cathy (Annabel Scholey) grows even angrier, and her determination intensifies to sabotage his life as a form of retribution for his previous wrongdoing
Throughout the series, her actions lead to increasingly severe repercussions. By the final episode, it’s revealed that one of the victims was her dearest friend, Sally (Kerri Quinn), whose body is found
But who is responsible? Read on for our spoiler-filled guide to the Dead and Buried ending.
Dead and Buried ending explained: Who killed Sally?
In the second-last episode of Dead and Buried, there was a somber conclusion when an unidentified attacker sneaked into Sally’s hospital room under cover of darkness and suffocated her
Earlier that week, she was attacked physically, following an unfortunate misunderstanding where she was falsely accused of interfering in the relationship between Cathy and Michael, a situation complicated by Jack, Jack’s powerful father-in-law
Screenwriter Colin Bateman skillfully maintains a sense of mystery in Dead and Buried, leaving viewers uncertain about who truly killed Sally as we approach the climax
As a movie enthusiast, is it conceivable that Cathy, driven by desperation to shift blame onto Michael, could be the one? Alternatively, might Michael, aiming to shield his son from enduring the same fate as him, be the one taking action? Or perhaps, someone else entirely, unrelated to this narrative, has a role yet to unfold?
In the fourth episode of Dead and Buried, it’s revealed that Michael and Cathy were blameless. Instead, Detective Cooper, played by Declan Rodgers, was responsible for Sally’s death in Dead and Buried
Alas, that doesn’t prevent a harrowing ending for everyone else in the show.
Michael’s growing suspicion points towards his son, Andrew (Michael Hanna), as the potential perpetrator of the initial assault on Sally, since the teenager’s phone was discovered nearby their residence
Concerned that the past might reoccur and his son could be imprisoned for a violent act, similar to what happened to the McAllisters before, he aimed to reach out to a reformed Sally in order to ask her not to implicate his son
Unfortunately, Detective Cooper got to her first.
As a devoted admirer, I found myself coerced into confronting Sally due to Jack’s suspicion that she was involved with Michael. However, in the heat of the altercation, my disguise inadvertently slipped, revealing my true identity
Once she came to, it was just a question of when Sally would recognize him, leading him to believe that she might soon resort to killing him in order to stop her from exposing his identity
In one of the closing moments, he confides in Jack about Sally’s real murderer, ensuring that they are the sole ones privy to this secret
After several weeks of cunning plotting by Cathy aimed at ruining him, it seems almost inevitable that Michael will bear the blame for the crime. In his last moments, he comes to terms with this outcome
Upon uncovering Cathy’s real persona through social networks, he visits her home to challenge her about disrupting his previously tranquil and thriving lifestyle
At first, he tries to persuade her that he’s changed for the better, but when it becomes clear that she won’t stop searching for Sally’s murderer – and continuing to suspect his son – he confesses to the crime instead
Shortly after, he inflicts a deep wound on his neck in Cathy’s kitchen, causing him to lose consciousness due to blood loss. Her response is unsettling, revealing an odd mix of excitement and joy, hinting at the depth of her descent
After an indeterminate period, Michael’s life continues and Cathy hasn’t informed anyone about the events that transpired. Michael clings to Cathy’s leg in what seems like a last appeal for compassion, yet she puts a plastic bag over his face, effectively silencing him through suffocation
Right then, her husband, Raymakes his descent the steps down the staircases – and found her wife’s for their namesake Gina straightforwardly, with her wife, titled “Raymie” (Waj Ali). He descends the stairs just in time to find his wife with her hands sme since its history. Catching her red-handed is an understatement, as he discovers her in the act
It’s suggested that Raymie knowingly participates in the murder, even though we don’t witness the exact events. This may be because Cathy, who is known for lying, has spun a false account of what transpired leading up to that critical moment
Instead of saying “The couple hide Michael’s body in their garden shed, eerily echoing comments previously made by Cathy’s therapist,” you could rephrase it as: “The couple secretly store Michael’s corpse in their garden shed, reminiscent of remarks earlier made by Cathy’s counselor.”
In the final scene’s compilation, we observe Andrew looking up Cathy on social media platforms, indicating a desire to delve deeper into the hardship that has affected his family, hinting at an eagerness for Cathy on social media platforms may suggest he seeks to learn more about the distress that has befallen on his kin
If it’s uncovered that his father’s previous lover is now wedded to his school teacher, that might pose a challenge for anyone to navigate through such a situation, even someone as skilled in deceit as Catherine
At this point, neither the BBC nor Virgin Media have given any hint about a second season for Dead and Buried. However, if creator Bateman were to choose to develop the story further, there is plenty of material to explore
