What you need to know
- Astro Bot released today on PlayStation 5, a platformer featuring cameos from beloved PlayStation characters throughout it’s history.
- The critic reviews have been outstandingly positive, and it currently sits at a 94 Metacritic score.
- I wrote back in May following State of Play that Xbox could replicate this cross generational appeal with many of their own IPs.
As a researcher with over a decade of experience in the gaming industry and a lifelong passion for all things video games, I’ve seen the rise and fall of many beloved franchises. The release of Astro Bot on PlayStation 5 has been a breath of fresh air, not just because it’s an outstanding game, but because it encapsulates the spirit of PlayStation so beautifully.
Astro Bot, as anticipated, debuted today with an array of positive reviews and high praise from critics. In a somewhat tumultuous week for Sony, following the unexpected removal of Concord PvP shooter just 11 days after its release, Astro Bot has burst onto the scene boasting an impressive Metacritic score of 94, with numerous outlets awarding it a perfect 10/10. In essence, the disappointing reception of Concord and the success of Astro Bot mirrors the “we’re so over” to “we’re so back” internet meme in real-time
Xbox has a huge back catalog of family friendly characters sitting unused
Today, I find myself climbing back onto my soapbox, as the overwhelming praise for Astro Bot and its seamless blending of PlayStation motifs has me convinced that there’s a hunger for games like this. Not only is this demand ripe, but at the moment, Xbox seems to lack a suitable response. In May, following the State of Play, I penned an opinion piece expressing my hope that Xbox would create its own mascot and game that appeals to audiences across generations – characters such as Banjo and Spyro come to mind. I’m not referring to figures like Master Chief here; rather, I mean characters akin to those. Sadly, events this year have demonstrated what became of Tango Gameworks
Could Astro Bot launch on PC?
Sony has experienced significant achievement in releasing their games on PC. For instance, Helldivers 2 debuted directly on the platform and set new records for sales on Windows PC. However, Concord didn’t seem to pick up much popularity. This could be attributed to its high price point and a highly competitive market
I certainly would love to see Astro Bot on PC, too, but right now, it’s PlayStation 5 exclusive and will probably remain that way for quite some time, given its themes heavily surrounding the console and the making use of the DualSense controller features. The style of game does lend itself well to handheld gaming though, so I hope on day to see it on my Steam Deck, a girl can dream!
