James Gunn's Superman Is the "True Start" of the New DCU

As a long-time DC fan and someone who has witnessed the ebb and flow of the DC Universe, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming “Creature Commandos” animated series and James Gunn’s “Superman” movie. The idea of an interconnected DCU is a dream come true for us fans, and the prospect of seeing Frank Grillo reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr. across both mediums is simply mind-blowing!

The animated series “Creature Commandos,” which takes place in the revamped DC Universe, serves as a tantalizing preview for the main event: James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. According to DC Studios co-head, this Viola Davis and Frank Grillo-voiced series (debuting on Max on December 5th) is likened to an “aperitif,” providing a taste of the interconnected DCU. This expansive universe officially kicks off when David Corenswet’s Man of Steel hits theaters in July 2025. One way they are linking these stories: Grillo will reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr., first seen in “Creature Commandos,” in both the live-action Superman and Peacemaker season 2

In simpler terms, the co-head of DC Studios told Entertainment Weekly that Superman is the foundation for everything and described it as a massive, epic story. He also mentioned that the series Creature Commandos will give viewers a small taste of what’s to come. This seven-episode Max Original series, written and executive produced by Gunn, contains many references to other DC stories and hints at things yet to be revealed, making it an enjoyable way to kick off the experience

In the storyline of Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” season 1, they were set within the DC Extended Universe where Henry Cavill played Superman. However, aspects of this narrative will continue into the larger DC Universe. As for how characters like Peacemaker (John Cena) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) can be part of both universes, Gunn hinted on Twitter: “I’ve found a way in. It won’t create confusion.”

In simpler terms, when talking about the DCU (DC Universe) in 2023, Gunn explained that animation and live action would be closely connected. This means that TV shows, movies, and games will all share the same universe. For instance, Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. character will appear in both Superman and Peacemaker, and a main character from Creature Commandos is expected to appear in the live-action Max series Waller

In the animated series “Creature Commandos,” a covert squad of imprisoned monsters is assembled to undertake missions that are too perilous for humans. Alongside Grillo’s Flag and Davis’ Waller, the star-studded cast boasts Steve Agee (known for his role in “Peacemaker”) as John Economos, Maria Bakalova (from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra (famous for “The Witcher”) as Circe, Zoe Chao (recognized from “The Afterparty”) as Nina Mazursky, Sean Gunn (acclaimed in “The Suicide Squad”) as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour (well-known for “Stranger Things”) as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk (celebrated in “Resident Alien”) as Dr. Phosphorus, and Indira Varma (renowned from “Game of Thrones”) as The Bride. Starting December 5th, you can watch “Creature Commandos” exclusively on Max; “Superman” will hit theaters on July 11th, 2025
