As a longtime fan who has followed James Gunn’s work since his days with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, I am beyond excited to dive into the world of DC Universe’s Creature Commandos! Having grown up on tales of oddballs and irregular types, this team of nasty antiheroes seems tailor-made for me.
James Gunn suggests that the Creature Commandos, the team at the heart of the initial project for the rebooted DC Universe, share a somewhat similar vibe with his past Marvel companions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, there’s a key distinction: unlike the likable misfits in the Milano, these gritty antiheroes aren’t known for their kindness. Instead, Gunn describes them as unsavory characters – essentially the Guardians without the emotional depth. In essence, his interpretation of this classic DC team aligns with how the Ravagers were portrayed in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film
The “Creature Commandos” series will focus on a squad, headed by Rick Flag’s father, consisting of Nina Mazursky, Dr. Phosphorus, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Weasel as its members. It appears that this storyline may explain how Weasel came to be under the control of Amanda Waller at the beginning of “The Suicide Squad,” although the extent to which “The Suicide Squad” is considered canon remains unclear. Gunn explained to EW that he’s accustomed to handling unusual individuals, which is what both “Guardians” and “Creature Commandos” encompass. In essence, “Creature Commandos” is like “Guardians,” but without the emotional depth. The Guardians have strong, genuine characters at their core, whereas this isn’t always true for the creatures
The Creature Commandos, though they may appear to be an old team, actually date back less far than one might assume. This unique group was brought to life by writers J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, making their debut in issue #93 of the 1980s series Weird War Tales. While they have appeared in limited versions over the years, since the 2011 event known as Flashpoint, they have become part of several significant crossover events and even starred in a series of animated shorts on Cartoon Network’s DC Nation block in 2014
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating series “Creature Commandos” features none other than Sean Gunn portraying Weasel, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., the talented Maria Bakalova donning the crown as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma embodying The Bride, Zoe Chao bringing Nina Mazursky to life, Alan Tudyk breathing life into Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour gracing our screens as Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn lending his voice to G.I. Robot, and the familiar face of Steve Agee (from “Peacemaker”) returning as John Economos!
The action-packed series titled “Creature Commandos” is set to make its grand entrance on Max this coming Thursday, December 5th. From that day forward, a new episode will be broadcast every week, with the final chapter airing on January 16th
