As a die-hard fan of the Batman universe who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless iterations of our beloved characters, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon seeing the IMAX poster for Joker: Folie à Deux. The prospect of Arthur Fleck and Harleen Quinzel dancing their way into madness on those iconic steps once again is a spectacle I simply cannot miss.
In the new IMAX poster for “Joker: Madness Duet”, characters portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix as Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, formerly known as Arthur Fleck and Harleen Quinzel respectively, plunge into insanity. This sequel captures their dance on the graffitied staircase that became renowned after the 2019 “Joker” movie. Interestingly, scenes from the trailer suggest Joker and Harley performing their acrobatic kicks on the steps of the Gotham City courthouse, where Arthur was filmed standing trial for his actions in the first film
The special IMAX poster heralds that “Joker 2” will be shown exclusively in IMAX 70mm format, a seldom-used cinema standard that enjoyed high demand for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two,” on only 30 select screens worldwide (19 of these are situated within the U.S.). Sales for all versions of the movie, including the global IMAX release and IMAX 70mm screenings, commence on September 9th
In the sequel to “Joker,” Arthur Fleck, now confined at Arkham Asylum, awaits his trial for his actions as the Joker. Battling with his two personas, Arthur unexpectedly discovers love and taps into a hidden musical talent within himself. Alongside Phoenix and Gaga, the star-studded cast includes Zazie Beetz from “Deadpool 2,” Brendan Gleeson from “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Steve Coogan known for his work in the “Alan Partridge” series, Catherine Keener from “Get Out,” Ken Leung from “X-Men: The Last Stand,” and Harry Lawtey from HBO’s “Industry.” Taking on the role of Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent is none other than the character being prosecuted for the Joker trial
In the second installment of Joker, directed by Todd Phillips, we find musical scenes interwoven with timeless tunes such as “Get Happy,” “That’s Life,” and “When You’re Smiling.” However, it’s important to note that while Joker 2 does have these musical elements, it doesn’t fit the conventional definition of a musical movie
In the movie, the majority of the music is essentially dialogue that Arthur can’t express in words. He expresses his feelings through singing instead, as explained by Phillips to Variety. The characters don’t burst into song like traditional musicals; rather, most of the musical scenes symbolize the shared mental instability between Arthur and Lee, a condition known as “folie à deux,” which refers to a shared psychosis or madness between two people
Joker: Folie ? Deux opens in theaters October 4th.
