Will there be a PS5 Pro? Release date rumours and predicted specs

As a seasoned cinephile who’s witnessed the evolution of gaming consoles since the days of Pong and Atari, I can confidently say that the latest rumors about the PS5 Pro have me both excited and somewhat skeptical. The idea of a more powerful console with improved specs is always tantalizing, but the digital-only rumor has me scratching my head, much like trying to figure out why certain movies win Oscars over others.

Despite the relatively recent launch of the PS5 Slim, it appears that Sony might be already developing a more advanced variant of their current-generation console.

Various leaks, rumors, and speculations have circulated extensively, providing more conjecture than a single person can process. Speculation ranges from the potential 8K resolution to the controversial digital-only nature of the rumored PlayStation 5 Pro, sparking lively discussion across the internet.

Now, however, there’s been even more leaks (including what looks like an accidental reveal).

So let’s take another look at the PS5 Pro rumours.

Will there be a PS5 Pro?

The existence of a PS5 Pro has not been officially confirmed by Sony at the time of writing.

It appears that an insider leak occurred, and it seems to have unintentionally exposed some designs recently. These developments certainly warrant further investigation!

As a dedicated fan, I’ve picked up some exciting buzz from a trusted source known as Lunatic Ignus. This individual hinted on their Discord that Sony might unveil a significant announcement next week, which could potentially lead to a State of Play later in the month. There’s a strong possibility these events are building up to the reveal of the long-awaited PS5 Pro!

It appears that an unintentional spill of information hints at a possible new PS5 model, as depicted in an image shared by PlayStation on their official blog post commemorating 30 years since the launch of their first console. In this image, there’s a subtle banner displaying Sony’s gaming hardware throughout the years, but nestled among them is a peculiar design that has piqued curiosity.

The design seems to resemble a PS5 Slim, yet it possesses grooves on the backside that aren’t found in any existing models. Could this be a prototype of the PS5 Pro? It might just be speculation or a slip-up (or, as we suggested earlier, an unintentional reveal).

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m always keeping tabs on the latest developments in the gaming world, especially when it comes to my beloved PlayStation series. While official comments are few and far between, a notable one came from Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s senior vice president of platform experience, during an interview with Famitsu in December 2022. He hinted at some exciting times ahead for the PS5, suggesting that it could surpass sales of 37 million units by the end of its fiscal year in 2022, making it a pivotal moment for this platform’s journey.

“At the moment, I can’t delve into details, but let me assure you, there’s something exciting to anticipate next year.”

It appears that what Nishino said wasn’t a rejection, leading some to interpret it as confirmation for the PS5 Pro. However, he might have been discussing the PSVR 2, the possible PS5 Slim version, and the PlayStation Portal instead.

If there’s no formal communication, the most reliable information we currently have is what’s been circulating as rumors or leaks.

Potential PS5 Pro release date rumours

Will there be a PS5 Pro? Release date rumours and predicted specs

Although Sony hasn’t confirmed the PS5 Pro yet, there are whispers suggesting it might be launched in autumn 2024. Given Sony’s past patterns, we could anticipate a November release if these rumors are true.

  • PS4 – November 2013
  • PS4 Pro – November 2016
  • PS5 – November 2020
  • PS5 Slim – November 2023

In summer 2023, a rumor surfaced that a new version of the PS5, codenamed Trinity, had been under development since early 2022. Reports suggest that demonstrations for this upgraded console have been taking place and studios have been using development kits since late November 2023. The plan is to release this console in fall 2024.

Of course, treat these rumors with a grain of salt until we receive authentic updates, because behind-the-scenes matters can be quite fluid, and circumstances often shift rapidly.

What could the PS5 Pro specs look like?

Multiple sources offer varying predictions about the PS5 Pro’s specifications, yet there are some potential features that seem to be widely agreed upon.

A potentially contentious design may follow a similar pattern, possibly incorporating a removable CD drive – similar to the PS5 Slim, suggesting a possibility of its reappearance in a future PS5 model.

In March 2024, according to Insider Gaming, it was announced that the PS5 Pro would boast a 28% boost in system memory. Additionally, while the CPU remains the same, it will introduce a ‘High CPU Frequency Mode’ capable of pushing the CPU to 3.85 GHz, representing a 10% increase. Further enhancements include a 35% amplification in ACV audio and a 45% acceleration in rendering speed.

A job posting from AMD in May 2022 (under the code name Viola) hinted towards using a cutting-edge RDNA chipset in upcoming gaming consoles. This upgrade is expected to enhance game visuals by supporting higher resolution displays and smoother, faster frame rates.

It’s possible that future updates could include 8K gaming support, given its increasing prevalence, since the standard PlayStation 5 model leverages supersampling to attain this resolution. According to Insider Gaming, such a feature was reportedly part of their plans for upcoming software development kits.

A frequently mentioned aspect is the introduction of a novel liquid cooling system, providing comfort for those who have grown tired of the PS5’s noisy fan.

In a discussion on PS5 Pro rumors and leaks over at ResetEra, one user proposes that specifications for the PS5 Pro have been disclosed. For comprehensive details, you can check out the thread, but the highlights seem to indicate that the PS5 Pro aims for “speedy storage, advanced ray tracing, and upscaling.”

The suggested specifications seem to aim for “consistently delivering 4K video at a frame rate exceeding 30 frames per second”.

As a passionate film enthusiast speaking, I’ve heard whispers that the PS5 Pro might opt for a digital-only format. This could send shivers down the spines of many gamers, but the idea seems to be about maintaining affordability. However, if you’re among those who’d rather pay more for the luxury of physical discs, there might just be two versions available to cater to your preferences.
