GameSir G8 Galileo Plus: What’s good
For my preferred choice in Xbox Cloud Gaming, the USB-C variant has been a clear favorite for its exceptional comfort. Similarly, I find the GameSir G8 Plus to be equally impressive. The fundamental design remains the same, but there was no need for change since it’s already ideal. The controller boasts a textured grip and back, improving its ergonomic feel. It also offers full-sized buttons and triggers, although the thumbsticks are slightly smaller, resembling compact handheld devices like the ROG Ally rather than the larger Xbox controller sticks. However, what truly sets the G8 Plus apart is its tactile feel, which I haven’t found in any other controllers.
When you look at both versions side by side, you’ll notice a small adjustment: the original G8 resembles the Xbox controller’s start and menu buttons layout. On the other hand, the G8 Plus adopts symbols similar to those on the Nintendo Switch – ‘plus’ and ‘minus’. However, the functionality of these buttons remains the same in both versions.

In essence, it’s a technology we hope Xbox incorporates in their future controller designs. Since there’s no physical contact between parts, there’s no risk of wear and tear or stick drift, ensuring the sticks remain dependable even after a year of use.

Connecting it with my smartphone was effortless; simply power up the controller and the flashing GameSir logo button indicates readiness for pairing. My Samsung phone quickly detected it, and I appreciate the smooth Bluetooth connection that requires minimal fuss.
The GameSir logo button serves two purposes: it shows which device the controller is connected to by glowing in different colors – yellow for Android devices, blue for iOS, and red when paired with a Nintendo Switch. Regarding the GameSir G8 Plus, it’s worth noting that it comes equipped with a 6-axis gyroscope, an feature missing from its USB-C counterpart. Additionally, it boasts dual motors for vibration feedback, making it a more attractive option at the same $79.99 price point.
The controller boasts a rubberized casing designed to keep your phone steady, preventing it from slipping during gameplay. This is particularly beneficial because the controller supports Bluetooth connectivity, making it compatible with a wider range of devices than its USB-C counterpart. Notably, several marketing visuals showcase its functionality with foldable phones, a feature that many mobile controllers lack. Although I couldn’t test it with a folding phone, it should fit comfortably in most models.
From my perspective as a gaming enthusiast, I absolutely appreciate the design of the controller’s backside, featuring two customizable buttons. This feature is particularly beneficial for games that demand continuous actions, as it allows for a more personalized control setup. Remapping controls not only spares my thumbs from undue strain but also elevates comfort during extended gaming marathons.
Instead of relying on the GameSir app for advanced button mapping, I discovered that the built-in controls were adequate for swiftly and intuitively adjusting rear buttons. Nonetheless, the app remains useful, especially for those who prioritize mobile gaming extensively.
GameSir G8 Plus: What’s not so good
Similar to the original G8 Galileo’s triggers, they lack the tactile feedback I favor, producing a hollow sound upon quick and repeated presses. Preferably, I’d go for triggers with a stronger, more substantial feel. However, I recognize that keeping the controller light is the reason behind their design in this manner.
Additionally, a possible concern arises when it comes to devices like the Google Pixel 9 Pro, which feature bulky rear cameras, as these might interfere with the controller’s ability to lie flat due to its design that completely surrounds the phone.
Furthermore, considering that it’s a Bluetooth controller, it means I need to remember to keep it charged for use, unlike USB-C devices with their plug-and-play convenience. Unfortunately, if your phone’s charging port is blocked, you can’t charge your phone simultaneously while using the controller. This is a significant disadvantage compared to the original G8, which provides pass-through charging.
GameSir G8 Plus: The Competition
The Galileo G8 Plus has a similar design to the PowerA MOGA XP7-X controller I tested last year. However, the wireless charging feature on the MOGA XP7-X had some problems with inconsistency, so I’m glad that the Galileo forgoes this feature if it means keeping costs low. The PowerA MOGA XP7-X is priced at $20 more and doesn’t incorporate hall-effect technology, which makes its $99.99 price point a bit challenging to accept.
If you’re after a gaming controller that’s easy to transport, the Turtle Beach Atom is another great choice. It connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and can be conveniently folded into a carry case, which makes it a more travel-friendly option if you prioritize portability in your on-the-go gaming setup.
Absolutely, if you’re looking for a high-end experience, the Razer Kishi Ultra doesn’t disappoint, but it comes with a hefty $149.99 cost. This controller boasts USB-C connectivity, RGB Chroma lighting, haptic feedback, and top-notch components. However, the high price might give you pause. In my opinion, GameSir offers a more budget-friendly option at a lower price point.
