However, another notable character from Batman’s rogues gallery is also present in this sequel to 2019’s unexpected hit “Joker.” The musical feature “Joker 2” brings back Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (The Joker) and introduces recording artist Lady Gaga as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (Harley Quinn). Todd Phillips is once again at the helm as director for “Joker 2,” collaborating with screenwriter Scott Silver to address some intriguing questions from the original movie, including whether we might witness the transformation of Harvey Dent into his Gotham crime lord alter ego, Two-Face.

Todd Phillips explained to IGN that while they appreciate comics and understand them, their approach for Harley Quinn was different. They drew inspiration from the animated series for Harley, but Margot Robbie is undeniably Harley Quinn in the film. As for Joker, Phillips stated that their interpretation, as shown in the movie, was to view it through a realistic lens rather than previous portrayals. In this film, Harvey Dent (played by Harry Lawtey) appears briefly as the Assistant DA prosecuting Arthur Fleck, but the focus is not on revealing his dark side. Instead, it’s about incorporating him in the trial setting given his role as a prosecutor.
Joker: Folie a Deux team rewrote scenes on paper napkins before shooting
A fascinating detail shared by the team of Joker: Folie a Deux is that Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix, and Lady Gaga often collaborated intensely on the script, even scribbling changes onto napkins mere moments before filming began.
As stated by Gaga, the trio frequently undertook substantial revisions during filming. Although Phillips doesn’t provide as much detail, he acknowledges that there were numerous rewrites – some of which were quickly scribbled on a napkin when no other materials were available.
Frequently, we’d find ourselves in Joaquin’s trailer, and at times, we’d rip apart the script and begin anew. Lady Gaga shared this with Vogue, describing it as a freeing, creative experience.
Phillips commented, “Regarding Joaquin, I thought he was the beacon of hope at the end of the tunnel. You might assume, ‘This part looks good, let’s just film it.’ But Joaquin would counter with, ‘Let’s discuss it first,’ and before you know it, we’re revising it on a napkin after a three-hour meeting. As for Lady Gaga, she’s remarkable because she stands her ground both behind the scenes, where she meticulously studies our set to tear things apart, and in front of the camera. That was no small accomplishment.”
