Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Preview Night Numbers Off to Strong Start

As a gamer who has spent countless hours traversing the realms of both the living and the dead in various video games, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement about the release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. The original movie was a staple of my Halloween viewing back in the day, and the news that this sequel is earning rave reviews has me eager to revisit the world of the afterlife.

The initial weekend for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” estimated to gross approximately $90 million, is showing great promise thus far, having earned over $13 million during its preview showings last night. This film, which has been garnering enthusiastic responses from viewers through exit polls conducted by ComScore, serves as a long-awaited sequel after 36 years, introducing a fresh generation of the Deetz family for another exhilarating journey beyond life. Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder reprise their roles from the original “Beetlejuice,” with Tim Burton also making a return as director. While the initial movie only grossed $75 million at the box office, it eventually became recognized as a timeless comedy masterpiece in the modern era.

In 2013, the film “Beetlejuice,” which had an initial budget of approximately $15 million, earned that much within three weeks from DVD sales alone, as reported by The Numbers. However, it’s interesting to note that the production cost for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” seems to have been closer to $100 million, implying a strong belief in the sequel by Warner Bros.

Last year, Disney experienced a similar situation when they invested between $295 million and $387 million in producing an Indiana Jones film, which only managed to gross $384 million at the box office. Taking marketing costs into account, the movie needed to earn approximately $600 million just to break even, which none of the previous four Indiana Jones movies had ever approached.

For the movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, an estimated sum near $250 million seems plausible, especially when considering projections suggesting it could earn up to $125 million just in North America this weekend. While comedies don’t usually perform exceptionally well abroad, given the strong franchise of “Beetlejuice”, it wouldn’t be shocking to witness a robust global response.

Here’s the official synopsis for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice:

“Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic, and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is in theaters now.
