As a lifelong Godzilla fanatic who has been following the towering titan since his first roar echoed through Japanese cinemas in 1954, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Godzilla Movie Marathon at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures! Growing up, I would watch these films repeatedly, captivated by the sheer scale and spectacle that only Godzilla could deliver. To finally have an opportunity to experience this cinematic behemoth on the big screen again with fellow kaiju enthusiasts is a dream come true.
This year marks Godzilla’s 70th birthday, as the first film showcasing the colossal kaiju was released in theaters back in 1954. Notably, Godzilla Minus One became the first movie featuring the lizard king to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, a significant event for the monster’s legacy. To celebrate Godzilla’s 70th birthday, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles is hosting a film marathon, offering kaiju fans another chance to enjoy some of Godzilla’s most memorable movie adventures on the big screen.
On November 3rd this fall, an all-day Godzilla film festival will take place at the Academy Museum. This event marks the anniversary of the first “Gojira” movie’s release in Japan on November 3, 1954, often referred to as Godzilla’s birthday. The museum is hosting this special occasion for the very first time, featuring an all-day marathon of Godzilla films, a giant kaiju figure in the lobby, and a workshop! As part of the celebration, there will also be a meet and greet with Krystopher Baioa, the creator of the Godzilla suit. Baioa’s unique fusion suit pays tribute to different versions of the King of the Monsters, and you can take a special photo with him during the event.
Godzilla’s Movie Marathon
The Godzilla movie extravaganza begins by showing the original “Gojira” in 35mm, marking the start of the series with the inaugural film. Afterward, we’ll watch “Destroy All Monsters,” a movie known for its epic monster battle seldom matched in the Toho universe. Next comes “Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster,” where Godzilla takes on the toxic menace called Hedorah. Following these classic films, fans will get to see more recent productions like “Shin Godzilla” by the renowned creator Hideaki Anno. Lastly, the marathon concludes with “Godzilla Minus One.

Although it’s undecided if there will be another “Minus One” sequel for Godzilla, the iconic monster still seems to have a promising future ahead. The massive success of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” has prompted Legendary to confirm that a third crossover film is under development. On the small screen, Apple TV+ is progressing with the second season of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” and has also announced plans for spin-offs.
