As a longtime fan of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as production for the final season has begun. I’ve been with this series since its inception, and it’s become more than just a show to me; it’s a beacon of hope, resilience, and an unwavering spirit that echoes through our own troubled times.

The journey of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” is nearing its conclusion. Last Friday, Hulu unveiled that filming for the sixth and last season has commenced by posting a photo of lead actress Elisabeth Moss holding the slate for the initial scene of the final season’s premiere episode. Moss will also be helming four episodes in this final chapter, including the series finale. Furthermore, it was disclosed that “The Handmaid’s Tale” is set to return in spring 2025, although a precise release date has yet to be specified.

As a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate the sixth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which promises to unravel the Season 5 cliffhanger. June (Moss), along with other Gilead refugees, embarks on a perilous journey, aiming to reach Hawaii – one of the last sanctuaries within the United States. This upcoming season will feature Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, Ann Dowd, O.T. Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, Ever Carradine, and Josh Charles. In an exciting turn of events, Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang will serve as executive producers as Bruce Miller steps down from his role as showrunner. However, Miller continues to remain an executive producer for the final season. Moss has shared that this series finale is dedicated to the fans who have stood by us throughout our journey.

Earlier this year, Moss expressed that this entire season is tailored specifically for the fans. Indeed, it caters to our viewers. More importantly, it’s a tribute to those who have supported us throughout five seasons, and in many ways, we are creating this season with them in mind.

Previously, Moss hinted that she is aware of The Handmaid’s Tale’s ending, yet she has taken care not to reveal any spoilers regarding June’s final outcome, the destiny of Gilead, and other crucial aspects.

She mentioned that she had already anticipated the outcome, and as a result, she feels hesitant to speak up because she fears inadvertently saying something incorrect or out of place. She’s quite anxious about the situation.

Although Moss is aware that The Handmaid’s Tale ends with Season 6, the story isn’t necessarily coming to an end. In fact, a spinoff series based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel, The Testaments, is currently being developed with Miller serving as showrunner for this new series. Set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, it remains to be seen how the book will impact the series, as Miller has previously referred to Atwood’s novel as an “independent curveball”.

In his words, Margaret Atwood unexpectedly added “The Testaments” to the series I was managing. It seems she had been contemplating this for some time. As much as I could, and I’m still doing so, I aimed not to link “The Handmaid’s Tale” too closely with “The Testaments“. He believes that each stand alone well and when the former is completed, it should be a satisfying TV show that you can place on a shelf alongside the novel. Ideally, it enhances your appreciation of it before moving on to “The Testaments“.

He stated, “Margaret’s method, which is remarkable, involves shutting one while saying, ‘I need not open this. However, let’s open the following one to discover its contents. It might be anything.’ Essentially, it’s a progression, but it feels like a standalone section with boundless possibilities.

The Handmaid’s Tale will return for it’s sixth and final season in Spring 2025.
