New Phantom of the Opera Movie in the Works at Disney+

As a gamer with a deep affection for both gaming and classic stories, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about Disney+’s new adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. With Kenny Ortega at the helm, known for his work on High School Musical and The Descendants, it’s clear that this will be a modern take on the story.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that a fresh take on “The Phantom of the Opera” is brewing over at Disney+! According to Deadline, this isn’t your typical adaptation. Instead, it’s a youthful reinterpretation of Gaston Leroux’s timeless gothic tale, originally serialized between 1909 and 1910. The visionary behind this project is none other than Kenny Ortega, known for his work on the High School Musical and Descendants franchises, along with Disney Branded Entertainment.

The classic novel “The Phantom of the Opera,” penned in the 1880s, revolves around the character Erik, a musically gifted yet disfigured individual who dwells beneath the Paris Opera House. Enamored with the soprano Christine, he manipulates several events to make her a star and attempts to win her affection. Over the years, this novel has inspired numerous adaptations, from silent films like Universal Studios’ 1925 version featuring Lon Chaney, to stage productions such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical, which later was adapted into a film in 2004 by Joel Schumacher, starring Gerard Butler, Patrick Wilson, Emmy Rossum, and Minnie Driver. Notably, Webber’s musical ran on Broadway for an impressive 35 years before concluding its run last year. In 2017, it was reported that Alex Kurtzman was planning to adapt “The Phantom of the Opera” for Universal’s Dark Universe, but this project has yet to materialize.

It’s yet undecided how Ortega plans to reimagine “The Phantom of the Opera” as a Young Adult (YA) adaptation. Whether it will be a musical or another format remains to be discovered. Also uncertain is whether the revamped tale will emphasize its horror elements, and if the ultimate goal is to create a franchise similar to “High School Musical” and “The Descendants,” though there’s certainly potential for such an expansion.

Disney+’s version of “The Phantom of the Opera” isn’t the first time the tale has been reimagined for young adult audiences. Back in 2000, there was “Phantom of the Megaplex,” a Disney Channel Original Movie that took significant liberties with Gaston Leroux’s novel. The setting was shifted from an opera house to a movie theater and several other alterations were made to the storyline.
