The Lord of the Rings' Orlando Bloom Teases Possible Legolas Return in The Hunt for Gollum

As a lifelong fan of Middle Earth, hearing the news that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is in production has filled me with unbridled excitement! I still remember the first time I watched the Fellowship of the Ring, and the magic it brought to my life. It’s been a long journey since then, but if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that I’m ready to return to Middle Earth once more!

Back in the early part of this year, Warner Bros. announced the release date for the upcoming Lord of the Rings film titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Since then, fans like me have been speculating whether the actors from the original series would reappear in Middle Earth for this new movie. Unfortunately, no concrete information about the film, either concerning cast or plot, has been disclosed so far. However, it seems that one star is open to the idea of returning. In an interview with Variety, Orlando Bloom expressed his willingness to rejoin the franchise that kick-started his entire acting career if invited.

Bloom, renowned for his role as Legolas in the The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film series, expresses his awe: “Gosh, those things are simply incredible!” He admits his puzzlement over their creation: “I can’t fathom how they manage it. I suppose with AI, anything is possible these days. Yet, if Pete [Peter Jackson] commands, I leap without hesitation. After all, he was the one who kick-started my acting career.

Boom explained, “I’m completely clueless about their intentions. I did chat with Andy Serkis, and he mentioned they were brainstorming ideas. When I asked how that could possibly be done, his response was ‘AI’, which left me rather puzzled until he said it. It was a fascinating period in my life, and I can’t think of any drawbacks to it.

It’s not just Bloom who’s shown curiosity about reprising his role in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf, has admitted that he’s been invited to come back as the legendary wizard. However, whether it materializes depends on scheduling and whether or not he’s available at the right time.

The excitement surrounding “The Lord of the Rings” remains strong… I’ve just learned there may be additional films in production, and it’s hinted that Gandalf could reappear, with hopes he might be portrayed by me, said McKellen. At 85 years old, McKellen also emphasized that the film is still in its early stages of development, and if they want him involved, time is a crucial factor.

As a keen enthusiast, I find myself pondering, “When will it unfold?” remains a mystery to me. “The storyline,” as of now, hasn’t been penned down in the script. Therefore, swift action is highly recommended.

Currently, it has been confirmed that Andy Serkis will be part of the upcoming film. Known for his role as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies, he is also set to direct and act in the movie titled The Hunt for Gollum. The screenplay is being written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Behind the scenes, Peter Jackson will be back as a producer, along with Walms and Boyens. Ken Kamins, Serkis, and Jonathan Cavendish from The Imaginarium will serve as executive producers.

The Hunt for Gollum serves as a tentative title, and it could change in the future. The story will predominantly revolve around Middle Earth from Gollum’s perspective. According to earlier statements by Serkis, we can expect an immersive exploration of Gollum’s character, potentially featuring familiar characters making appearances, but their identities remain a secret for now.

Viggo Mortensen, the actor who portrayed Aragorn in “The Lord of the Rings” movies, has expressed that he needs more information before becoming genuinely excited about potential returns of familiar characters from those films.

In his words, “I haven’t had a chance to look at the script yet,” Mortensen explained. “To be honest, I’m not sure. The script is crucial for me, but if I’m in a tight spot financially and have no other options, I’ll take any opportunity that comes my way.

Recently, he’s been fortunate as he hasn’t had to pick a project based on the paycheck for some time.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is expected to hit theaters in 2026.
