Martin Shaw – George Gently
Who does this character portray? Inspector George Gently is an old-fashioned detective with a strong moral compass who dislikes making hasty judgments about people. Prior to our encounter, he served in World War II, met his wife Isabella, and worked as a Chief Inspector in London. At Isabella’s funeral, he resigned, informing his superiors that he believed his hazardous job led to his wife’s murder.
However, in his last case in Northumberland, he encountered DS John Bacchus, leading him to decide to settle in the North East. Now, with retirement on the horizon, he finds himself worried about Bacchus and another protégé, DS Rachel Coles – can they handle the responsibilities that come with their positions?
Have I encountered him somewhere else? Possibly in courtroom drama Judge John Deed, cop show The Chief, or series like Always and Everyone, Rhodes, or The Professionals. In the ’60s, he acted as Robert Croft on Coronation Street. He hasn’t been seen on screen since 2021.
Lee Ingleby – John Bacchus
What character does he portray? Bacchus is a skilled and clever police officer, yet he often doesn’t adhere strictly to regulations and lacks Gently’s tolerance. In some instances, he may take shortcuts or even violate the law, and he can exhibit appalling levels of bigotry and sexism.

In one of the episodes, the story revolves around an old crime that resurfaces when a corpse is found in a chemical factory on Teesside. Gently learns that the victim’s spouse was previously convicted for the murder and has served eight years behind bars. DI Bacchus was involved in the initial investigation and expresses strong opposition when Gently decides to re-examine the case unconventionally. Will this reveal a shocking miscarriage of justice, or leave the inspector appearing foolish?
Have I encountered her in any other productions? Anamaria Marinca portrayed Maria in Maigret’s Dead Man. She also took on the role of Dr Dahlin in the Ghost in the Shell remake, and starred as Marta Kamen in the TV series Mars. Last year, she was a recurring character in The Chelsea Detective.
Victoria Bewick – Marion Liddell
Who does she play? Marion plays the daughter of Eve Liddell, now grown up.
Have I encountered her in any previous productions? Here’s one place where I recognized Victoria Bewick: she portrayed Yvonne Bridges in a Call the Midwife Christmas special and appeared as Muriel Roberts in the Margaret Thatcher film, The Iron Lady. These roles seem to be her most prominent ones recently.
Ruby McAvoy – Young Marion
Who does she play? The younger Marion appears in flashback scenes.
Where have I seen her before? This is Ruby McAvoy’s first and only on-screen role.
David Prosho – Donnelly
Who does he play? David Prosho stars as Donnelly in Gently and The New Age.
