As a long-time quiz enthusiast who can remember the days when Magnus Magnusson ruled the airwaves, I must confess that my heart skipped a beat when Mastermind was delayed yet again. The anticipation of watching brilliant minds battle it out under the unforgiving glare of the spotlight is always exhilarating, and to have it snatched away by a cricket match, no less, felt like a cruel twist of fate.
The airing of Mastermind has been postponed twice consecutively, giving way to Test cricket broadcasts on BBC Two.
The lively game show presented by BBC News anchor Clive Myrie commenced its 2024/25 term not long ago. However, its advancement has temporarily ceased due to England competing against Sri Lanka at the Kia Oval stadium in London.
Since their last Test match here back in 1998, when Sri Lanka clinched a thrilling 10-wicket win against England, this upcoming game promises to be an exciting spectacle for cricket enthusiasts.
Consequently, BBC Two has decided to replace Mastermind with its regular 7:30pm airtime with live coverage from the fourth day of the ongoing Test series instead.
It might be disheartening for admirers of the decades-old trivia show, airing since 1972, to learn that its current host, Myrie, is stepping down, following in the footsteps of Magnus Magnusson, Peter Snow, Clive Anderson, and John Humphrys.
Through the BBC schedule, we are aware that various specialist topics will be featured when the program resumes at 7:30 pm on the upcoming Monday, specifically on the 16th of September.
Here are some notable figures: Martin Scorsese’s movies, Phil Ochs – an American songwriter, Edith Head who was a renowned costume designer, and Mary Tudor, a significant historical figure. If you want to participate, it’s time to start learning now!
Some supporters expressed bewilderment when Mastermind suddenly didn’t appear in the schedules the previous week, prompting one individual to reach out to Myrie via X (previously known as Twitter), expressing their disappointment and stating that they “missed” the program.
Next week, the popular black chair will make its comeback in the quiz show, with even more competitors daring to face the relentless timer and intense stage lights, all vying for victory.
Hi, back next week, Monday 16th. Thanks.

Today marked the conclusion of the intense rivalry between England and Sri Lanka. BBC Two’s “Today at the Test” program is all set to delve into the factors that led to the final outcome (without giving away the results for those eagerly awaiting the broadcast).
England’s national cricket squad will temporarily halt their activities for a brief respite, returning to the field later for additional international matches. They are set to play against Pakistan in the upcoming month, with their encounter with New Zealand scheduled for December.
Mastermind continues on BBC Two at 7:30pm on Monday 16th September 2024.
