Marvel's Elizabeth Olsen Addresses Bringing Back Scarlet Witch

As a long-time MCU fan who has witnessed the evolution of Wanda Maximoff from a supporting character to the complex and powerful Scarlet Witch, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension about the future of this beloved character.

In the upcoming installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+, titled “Agatha All Along,” we delve deeper into the story of Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn, who was last seen ensnared in Wanda Maximoff’s/The Scarlet Witch’s enchantment in Westview, New Jersey. Simultaneously, Wanda Maximoff experienced a downward spiral as the Scarlet Witch in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” culminating in a dramatic turn of events that left her fate uncertain.

Despite speculation that the storyline of Scarlet Witch in the MCU might be concluded permanently, actress Elizabeth Olsen has consistently fielded queries about Wanda Maximoff’s future since the release of Doctor Strange 2 in 2022. In her most recent interview, Olsen hinted that if Marvel Studios can regroup and plan effectively, she is open to reprising her role as Scarlet Witch again.

I really enjoy revisiting this character when she’s utilized effectively, and I feel fortunate that when I first started, I was used in just such a way… but for a moment, they seemed unsure about what to do with me.” Olsen stated on FM 104. “Whenever there’s an opportunity to use her well, I’m always eager to return.

In many aspects, Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of Scarlet Witch in Phase 4 serves as a symbol of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s decline. Following the record-breaking success of Avengers: Endgame, Olsen was thrust into the forefront of the MCU’s expansion onto Disney+, leading the series WandaVision. Despite the unique and challenging nature of a superhero TV show, and her first significant role as a main character in the MCU, Olsen played a key part in launching Marvel’s new television division on a promising note. WandaVision received critical praise, earned numerous prestigious Emmy Award nominations, and sparked excitement among MCU fans after Endgame and the cultural impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the immense potential and enthusiasm generated by this series ultimately collided with Doctor Strange 2, as Sam Raimi’s film was met with criticism for undermining the subtle character development showcased in WandaVision, further highlighting the creative divide between MCU movies and their television counterparts.

As a gamer, I diplomatically navigated the complexities of ‘Multiverse of Madness’ and Scarlet Witch’s descent into darkness. Yet, I’ve been open about my future Marvel roles, opting for a case-by-case commitment to keep things exciting. Now, it seems that Kevin Feige may be considering my input on my next storyline. If I appear in ‘Agatha All Along’ and potentially the ‘Vision Quest’ series – which could be another chapter in WandaVision – well, only time will tell!

The charming series titled “Agatha All Along” will debut on September 19th. Keep an eye out for further announcements concerning the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
