All Creatures stars on Tristan’s welcome return: ‘He means so much to so many people’

As a dedicated fan of All Creatures Great and Small who has followed the series since its inception, I must say that the return of Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) in season 5 is like a long-lost friend coming home. The absence of his charming character and infectious energy was sorely felt during season 4, but now, with Tristan’s comeback, it feels as if the heart of Darrowby has been restored.

The return of All Creatures Great and Small is exciting for a number of reasons, but for many, the highlight of season 5 will be Tristan’s long-awaited comeback.

In the fourth season, the character played by Callum Woodhouse was missing due to his deployment with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, as seen in the 2023 Christmas special. This was a letdown not only for viewers but also for the show’s cast members.

In a playful tone, Rachel Shenton, the actress portraying Helen, mentioned: “He’s still part of our WhatsApp group, sharing dog photos [she chuckles].

But Tristan is finally set to return to Darrowby in the upcoming episodes.

Ralph expressed repeatedly that both Tristan and Callum were sorely missed in the show. It’s delightful to have Tristan return, and it’s a joy to collaborate with Callum again. Our shared scenes were exceptional and full of laughter,” said Ralph.

He went on to say that “Tristan, as a character, means so much to so many people within the house, so it was a joy having him back”.

Watching them work together with Carmody, especially since they’re such contrasting personalities, brings a lot of enjoyment. And let me tell you, Callum has quite the sense of humor – an absolute joy to be around, whether it’s on or off set. It was truly a delightful experience.

Shenton noted that the character’s comeback was a source of “pleasure,” partly because Tristan adds a touch of “troublemaking” or “mischief-making” to the household.

Helen and Tristan seem to have that playful naughtiness about them, since neither of them currently hold jobs, including Tristan not being at Skeldale, they often find themselves with the freedom to indulge in a bit more mischief and laughter.

Prior to the announcement of season 5, there was doubt about whether Woodhouse would return soon. However, the actor has later revealed that it had always been intended for him to resume his role.

He expressed his pleasure about stepping away for a while to focus on different tasks and then returning home to his family. Initially, he felt a bit apprehensive, wondering if it would feel strange or if he’d be out of touch. However, his first day back was spent at The Drovers, which turned out to be the ideal location for filming Tristan’s return scenes, making it a great start.

As the sun rose, I eased myself into the day, feeling a sense of familiarity upon my return post-lunch. To tell the truth, it was as if I hadn’t left at all.

It felt incredibly natural and effortless returning, as if no time had passed at all. I picked up right where we left off with the familiar cast and crew, sharing laughter and camaraderie just like old times. It was truly a delight.

After my stint caring for creatures in the heart of Egypt, I’ve been instructed to make a comeback to Skeldale. Here, I’ll be mentoring fresh faces who are bound for assignments much like the ones I’ve experienced.

Regarding the other characters, Helen finds herself occupied with baby Jimmy as James is stationed at RAF Abingdon, and she’s contemplating her community involvement as World War II intensifies. Siegfried (Samuel West) strives to maintain the surgery smoothly, Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) assumes a fresh responsibility, while Carmody expresses his readiness for advancement.
