As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for diverse and dynamic characters, I can hardly contain my excitement over Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez’s upcoming release, La Borinque?a Volume 1! Having grown up in Puerto Rico myself, I find a deep connection to the story and the vibrant world that Miranda-Rodriguez has created.
Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, winner of the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award at Comic Con International and renowned graphic novelist and philanthropist, has unveiled La Borinque?a Volume 1, a compiled hardcover edition of over 300 pages from his initial four graphic novels. To complement the launch, Somos Artes (Miranda-Rodriguez’s publishing company) has also disclosed plans for a collection of action figures showcasing La Borinque?a and her secondary characters. Both the hardcover edition and the action figures are now up for pre-order by retailers this month, with a proposed release during the holiday season (the exact date is still undecided).
This compilation, titled “The La Borinque?a Volume 1“, gathers the inaugural issue from 2016 (now a permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History), followed by issues La Borinque?a #2 (2018), La Borinque?a #3 (2021), and the highly praised collaboration, “La Borinque?a Guest Starring Rosario Dawson” (2022). All of these issues will be part of this collection.
In a statement, Rosario Dawson expressed that wherever comics venture, she believes La Borinqueña will follow suit, given her character’s vibrancy. She added, “I aspire to embody a hero like that.
Apart from starring together in a miniseries, Dawson has expressed her desire multiple times to see the character portrayed in a screen adaptation.
“La Borinqueña Volume 1” will introduce readers to the complete narrative of the graphic novel series featuring Miranda-Rodriguez’s title character, which has been published intermittently since its introduction in 2016 over the past eight years. A percentage of the proceeds from sales will continue to fund Miranda-Rodriguez’s charitable efforts, contributing $200,000 so far to various organizations across Puerto Rico.
Graphic novels by “La Borinqueña” are not only popular in schools across Puerto Rico and the U.S., but also at esteemed institutions such as MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Fordham, Colgate, and many others, both within and beyond our borders.
The Smithsonian is planning to incorporate “La Borinqueña Vol. 1” along with “Ricanstruction: Remembering & Rebuilding Puerto Rico” into their lasting archive.
The initial artwork for “La Borinque?a Volume 1” was skillfully crafted by cover artist Angel Jes Colón, known for his work on titles like Acton Comics, Green Lantern, and Dark Crisis. Inside the comic, the story art was contributed by Will Rosado (1/6, GI Joe), Christopher Sotomayor (Avengers, Captain America), with Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez penning the narrative.
As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that my beloved Borinqueña action figure set has been crafted by Boss Fight Studio, renowned for their meticulously articulated action figures and their commitment to introducing diversity within the action figure realm.
As soon as we delved into the pages of “La Borinque?a“, we were captivated by the female strength, diversity, and mesmerizing storytelling – it felt incredibly suitable for us,” expressed Erik Ara?a, Co-Founder of Boss Fight Studio. “The opportunity to transform these potent characters into action figures is a long-cherished aspiration.
Starting with miniature figures at a 1:12 scale, this collection features four characters: La Borinqueña, Luz, Oro El Coqui Dorado, and La Gargola. These characters were announced before the COVID-19 pandemic but faced delays in 2020. They were then rescheduled to coincide with the release of the hardcover edition.
In her own words, Miranda-Rodriguez shared that since La Borinqueña and her other characters are admired globally for their compelling stories, activism, and charitable efforts, she was eager to collaborate with a company to convert them into intricately designed action figures. She found Boss Fight Studio to be the perfect ally due to their creative approach towards articulated toys. The designs appear as if they’ve leaped from the pages of our comics, making both collectors and children thrilled at the prospect of creating their own adventures with this new line.
