As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of Marvel Comics, I must say that the concept art for Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Weapon X variant has sent my nostalgia meter soaring! Growing up, Barry Windsor Smith’s artwork was like manna from heaven to me, and seeing this homage to his iconic image is a delightful trip down memory lane. The aggressive posturing and subtle asymmetry of the helmet design are a testament to the artists’ dedication to preserving the essence of the original while adapting it for live-action.
The recently unveiled concept art of Deadpool and Wolverine showcases the Weapon X version that Marvel Studios has developed for the upcoming movie. On Instagram, Phil J. Saunders shared his tribute to Barry Windsor Smith’s original design. Back then, there was a wealth of fantastic Wolverine artwork being produced. This time around, Andy Park and Saunders focused on bringing Weapon X to life in live-action. The artist discussed the challenges of designing the helmet and maintaining Hugh Jackman’s iconic mutant’s aggressive stance for this variant.
As a kid, Barry Windsor-Smith was a massive influence on me, and that iconic Weapon X image of Wolverine is one I’ll never forget. When Andy Park asked me to work on Deadpool & Wolverine Variants, I knew I had to bring that image to life. The subtle asymmetry of the helmet and the blend of aggression and vulnerability in BWS’s composition were captivating. I hope my tribute does even a tiny bit of justice to the original.
What Deadpool Variants Made It Into The Movie?
As a die-hard gamer, I can’t help but notice the abundance of Deadpool variations in the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine.” However, what truly stood out for fans was the emergence of the expansive Deadpool Corps on the big screen. Director Shawn Levy, during an interview with “The Official Marvel Podcast,” shared his preparation process for this film. Among the pile of comics he read, the Corps’ debut caught his eye. He knew then and there that if given a chance, their presence should be brought to life on the silver screen.
When working with Ryan on the script and preparing for the film, I read over a hundred issues of the comic books. Despite this extensive reading, I must admit that I never fully grasped or completely understood the Deadpool Corps. This realization came early on when I asked Marvel to flood me with comics, and they did just that. I found myself constantly immersed in them.
