Marvel’s 85th Anniversary Supercut Is Missing the MCU’s Best Moment

Marvel's 85th Anniversary Supercut Is Missing the MCU's Best Moment

As a dedicated Marvel enthusiast who has followed the MCU since its inception, I must say that the omission of Captain America’s poignant “I had a date” moment from Marvel’s 85th anniversary video is nothing short of criminal! This scene, which encapsulates the timeless love story between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, has left an indelible mark on my heart.

Following our watch of Marvel’s assemblage of the 85 top moments from their Cinematic Universe, we’ve noticed a significant omission – a moment we believe to be among the best, yet it didn’t make the cut. With over 20 movies and series under the MCU umbrella, selecting the crème de la crème can be a daunting task, as each viewer may have their personal favorites. However, there’s no disputing that some moments carry more weight than others. Surprisingly, Marvel’s anniversary video, spanning nearly an hour, fails to acknowledge one of Captain America’s most poignant and emotional scenes.

In the MCU timeline, Captain America: The First Avenger is the initial film and it appears three times in the 85th anniversary video. The first scene showcases Steve Rogers delivering his famous line, “I can keep this up all day,” following an altercation with a bully. The second instance focuses on the experiment that alters scrawny Steve Rogers into the valiant Captain America. Lastly, we witness Captain America in action as he successfully destroys a Hydra tank.

Three scenes for the first Captain America movie is definitely on the higher end for projects in the video, but the movie’s final scene was also worthy of consideration. After being woken up from his icy slumber by S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America runs out into the busy New York City streets where he’s confronted by Nick Fury. Cap is told that he’s been asleep for almost 70 years. After hearing the shocking news, the only thought on Cap’s mind is, “I had a date.” This is referring to Peggy Carter, who Cap had started having feelings for. Luckily, Cap and Peggy were able to finally have that date/dance in the final scene in Avengers: Endgame.

Captain America and Peggy Carter’s love story throughout the MCU

Viewers have longed for the reunion of Captain America and Peggy Carter, and Avengers: Endgame finally granted that heartwarming scene. While an older Peggy Carter was present in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, she was battling memory loss. Previously, Captain America: The Winter Soldier took audiences to an old S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where Steve Rogers caught a glimpse of Peggy, but he missed the opportunity for meaningful interaction with her. However, in Avengers: Endgame, viewers were given a chance to see these characters connect in a special way.

Discussing that dance from earlier, it was Scarlet Witch who enchanted Captain America and Peggy Carter to dance together on the floor in the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” This scene highlights how much Peggy has been on Cap’s mind. Some viewers might find issue with Cap altering the past to live his life and grow old with Peggy, especially since he also shared a kiss with Peggy’s niece, Sharon Carter.

It appears that Marvel Studios is determined to provide Captain America with a satisfactory conclusion, even if it doesn’t align perfectly with the narrative flow. This could be the reason behind excluding Cap’s “I had a date” scene from the 85th anniversary compilation.
