As a fan with a deep appreciation for the darker side of Gotham City, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Colin Farrell and his reluctance to return as The Penguin. After immersing himself in the grueling makeup process and intense mental turmoil that comes with portraying this complex character, it’s no wonder he’d be hesitant to dive back into Oz Cobb’s troubled waters.
Colin Farrell expresses concerns about returning for season 2 of “The Penguin.” HBO’s upcoming series, a spinoff from “The Batman,” will consist of eight episodes and is scheduled to premiere on September 19th. This series bridges the gap between the 2022 reboot and the anticipated sequel, “The Batman Part II” in 2026. Although Farrell will resume his role for the Matt Reeves-directed sequel that reportedly continues the story of “The Penguin,” the actor reveals that the intense transformation into the scarred Gotham criminal takes a significant toll on him.
When asked about a potential second season of “The Penguin” by Total Film, Farrell expressed uncertainty, visibly discomfited. “Let me clarify – I adored it – but it left me with a mix of feelings. Towards the end, I was venting to anyone who’d listen about how much I wished it were over. I tried to remind myself that I felt both grumpy and grateful,” he said, acknowledging his appreciation for the role and its legacy in Batman storytelling.
In his own words, Farrell characterizes the proposed series as very dark, intense, and extremely violent. He expresses reservations about stepping into Oz Cobb’s character in a possible second season due to this potent blend of elements created by Matt Reeves, Lauren LeFranc (showrunner), and Mike Marino (prosthetics and make-up designer). According to him, the overall experience was very impactful.
Beyond the demanding makeup application, playing Penguin also calls for significant mental fortitude. Following the demise of mob boss Carmine Falcone (portrayed by John Turturro in The Batman), the ambitious Oswald Cobblepot finds himself embroiled in a violent power struggle with the Falcone family’s heirs: Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) and Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), who are seeking to claim their deceased patriarch’s criminal empire.
In response to the possibility of a second season, Farrell stated, “Lauren asked, ‘Could we discuss something logical?’ To which I replied, ‘Of course!’ Perhaps next year. However, upon completion, I felt, ‘I have no desire to don that suit and that headgear ever again.’
The series titled ‘The Penguin’ featuring Rhenzy Feliz known for ‘Runaways’, Michael Kelly from ‘Man of Steel’, Shohreh Aghdashloo starring in ‘The Flight Attendant’, Deirdre O’Connell seen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’, Clancy Brown appearing in ‘Billions’, James Madio recognized by The Offer, Scott Cohen famous for The Americans, Carmen Ejogo prominent in True Detective, and Theo Rossi well-known from ‘Luke Cage’ will make its debut on Thursday, Sept. 19th on both HBO and Max. Afterward, it will air every Sunday starting from Sept. 29th exclusively on HBO.
