Netflix's Leviathan Shares Gorgeous New Trailer: Watch

As a die-hard anime fan with over two decades of dedication under my belt, I can confidently say that Studio Orange is quickly becoming one of my favorite studios in the industry. Their unique blend of traditional animation and cutting-edge CG has breathed new life into some of my most beloved franchises, such as Beastars and Land of The Lustrous.

In recent years, computer-generated (CG) animation has grown significantly within the realm of anime. Notable franchises like Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, Ghost in The Shell, and many more are employing this animation style to express their distinct narratives. One studio that stands out for its expertise in this emerging aesthetic is Studio Orange. Previously recognized for popular anime productions such as Beastars, Land of The Lustrous, and Trigun Stampede, they are now working on a sequel series featuring Vash The Stampede. However, another exciting anime series titled “Leviathan” is set to debut on Netflix, with a fresh trailer to generate anticipation.

If you’re not familiar with Leviathan, the anime series draws inspiration from a trilogy of novels by Scott Westerfeld instead of manga or manwha. Set in a world reminiscent of ours, the first book, titled Leviathan, introduced us to Prince Aleksander, a young royal navigating life with few luxuries befitting his rank. This initial novel was published in 2009, and it was followed by two more novels, Behemoth and Goliath}. However, Studio Orange has yet to announce any plans for adapting these sequels in a similar fashion.

Leviathan’s New Trailer

The newly released preview showcases a unique perspective on World War I, with this animated setting featuring warriors frequently utilizing mechanical exosuits known as “Clankers”. Unlike advanced mechs like Mobile Suit Gundams or Eva Units, the Clankers may not possess immense power, but as depicted in the trailer, they appear adaptable to battlefield scenarios. The forthcoming anime series has yet to announce its specific premiere date, though it’s expected to debut on Netflix in 2025.

Is CG The Future of Anime?

In a conversation earlier this year, Eiji Onomoto (a co-founder of Studio Oranger) spoke about their reliance on computer-generated animation and its increasing presence in the anime industry. He mentioned that as the demand for computer graphics in the animation sector grew, it was seen as a solution to tackle complexities that traditional animation found challenging. However, at that point, he admitted to doubts about whether a studio specializing solely in CG could sustain profitability due to the instability of the situation.

Following Onomoto’s analysis, they dissected one of Orange’s earlier pieces, “Land Of The Lustrous“, and the blending of Computer-Generated (CG) art into animation. Being the primary producer, Orange gained broader recognition from this project which remains a key achievement in our portfolio. From a creative standpoint, it marked an essential step towards accepting CG by anime enthusiasts. Earlier, we had received favorable responses for robotic characters, but “Land of the Lustrous” demonstrated that CG personas could also find acceptance. Since then, we’ve consistently enhanced our quality and expanded our range of expressions, all inspired by the groundwork set by “Land of the Lustrous“.

Orange’s Future

Apart from launching “Leviathan” next year, Orange also has several other significant anime adaptations in store. The initial part of “Beastars'” final season will arrive on Netflix before Prince Aleksander makes his appearance. Although they haven’t specified a release date yet, Trigun: Stargaze is generating a lot of excitement as one of the most anticipated series from the studio.
