Unfortunately, this rapid advancement and adoption of technology has resulted in some employees being displaced. Additionally, recruiters are now prioritizing candidates with proficiency in AI, as demonstrated by a significant surge – 142 times – in LinkedIn members adding skills like Copilot and ChatGPT to their profiles.
In an unexpected development, it’s reported that AI technology, specifically Google AI, will be used in Nevada to decide eligibility for unemployment benefits. This new system will scrutinize transcripts from unemployment appeal hearings and offer suggestions based on its analysis, indicating whether or not the unemployed individuals should receive benefits.
As an observer, I note that Nevada officials are advocating for a fresh method aimed at streamlining the appeals process concurrently reducing expenses and conserving time that would have otherwise been invested in examining and approving such applications. It’s acknowledged by Nevada itself that it grapples with a substantial pile-up of cases dating back to the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
AI desperately needs human intervention
AI might significantly reduce decision-making time to as little as five minutes. However, considering AI’s limitations, how precise will this method be? As per Christopher Sewell, Director of Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation (DETR), the state plans to incorporate human oversight into this system to prevent any crucial details from being overlooked by the AI.
“There’s no AI [written decisions] that are going out without having human interaction and that human review. We can get decisions out quicker so that it actually helps the claimant.”
