As a long-time Marvel fan with a heart full of nostalgia and a head bursting with comic book lore, I can confidently say that this upcoming prequel to “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” animated series has me absolutely thrilled!
The forthcoming animated Spider-Man series on Disney+ is set to be accompanied by a prequel comic book titled “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”. When viewers were introduced to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War”, he was already well into his career as the web-slinger. Marvel Studios is delving into Peter Parker’s early days as he navigates his journey towards becoming a superhero, much like the animated X-Men series of 1997 known as “X-Men ’97“. And just like “X-Men ’97“, a Marvel comic book will narrate the events that unfold prior to the arrival of “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” on Disney+ later this year.
Marvel revealed that the prequel comic for “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is a five-part limited series, penned by Christos Gage and illustrated by Eric Gapstur. This narrative will acquaint readers with a young Peter Parker, his circle of friends, and several iconic Spidey foes. The comic book series previews some of the thrilling tales that are expected in the much-anticipated animated show, which unfolds during Peter’s early days as Spider-Man.
Gage shared that while he’s had the pleasure of penning numerous Spider-Man tales across comics and video games, there’s one aspect he hasn’t been able to explore yet: his early escapades. The thrilling aspect of this book lies in its fresh perspective on those pivotal moments. Although this is undoubtedly Peter Parker, our familiar Spidey character, he’ll encounter a new set of companions – including Nico Minoru from Runaways – and some unexpected turns!
