In Marvel’s fresh Ultimate Universe, Doctor Strange is about to grace our presence for the first time. Each installment in the latest series of Ultimate comics offers a unique spin on beloved Marvel characters and adversaries. For instance, Ultimate Black Panther has reimagined Okoye as queen to King T’Challa, while introducing Erik Killmonger and Storm as liberators. The book’s villain, Moon Knight, is intriguingly depicted as two distinct personalities – Khonshu and Ra. The recent issue of Ultimate Black Panther is now paving the way for the arrival of another familiar face: Doctor Strange.

In issue #8 of The Ultimate Black Panther, the creative team consisting of Bryan Hill, Stefano Caselli, David Curiel, and VC’s Cory Petit take us through the continuation of the intense conflict between Wakanda, Ra, and Khonshu. The story begins with a fierce battle that leaves Black Panther injured after being struck by a blade forged from an enigmatic green substance, which appears to counteract Vibranium. During his recovery, T’Challa experiences vivid visions that seemingly reveal the origin of Wakanda’s valuable resource. Later on, T’Challa gains the ability to mentally interact with Vibranium and control it at will.
In the second part of “Ultimate Black Panther” issue 8, T’Challa sends Killmonger and Storm on a quest to find someone who can help him decipher Vibranium and its mystical aspects. This individual is eventually located in Eastern Europe. After a brutal interrogation, he agrees to disclose the location of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Who will be the Ultimate Universe’s Doctor Strange?
In the primary Marvel Universe, Doctor Strange holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme – though this may have changed following the events of Blood Hunt with Doctor Doom taking over. However, it isn’t certain that Doctor Strange will retain this position in the Ultimate Universe. The person being questioned by Killmonger and Storm is even referred to as “them,” suggesting that the identity of the Sorcerer Supreme could be male, female, or non-binary. This ambiguity might also be Marvel’s way of maintaining a surprise for when they eventually reveal the true gender of the Sorcerer Supreme in future issues.
Besides Doctor Strange, other potential candidates include his wife Clea, Wong, or even Brother Voodoo. Given that the cast of the Ultimate Black Panther is predominantly Black, it could be logical for Brother Voodoo to assume the role of Sorcerer Supreme and ally himself with Black Panther in their battle against Moon Knight.
