As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic longing for the Sonic Advance trilogy. These games were more than just a part of the Game Boy Advance era; they were a significant chapter in my own gaming journey. The first time I met Cream, the adorable chao caretaker, was in those very games, and since then, she’s been a cherished character in my Sonic universe.
Although several 2D installments of Sonic the Hedgehog have been re-released, the Sonic Advance trilogy remains exclusive to the Game Boy Advance. Despite their success on this platform, they are yet to appear on Switch or any other contemporary systems. However, this might alter in the future, as indicated by Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, during an interview with Video Games Chronicle. Iizuka mentioned that there are no existing plans for remakes or remasters at present, but he appeared optimistic about the idea.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news about the possible remake or remaster of the Sonic Advance series. However, Takashi Iizuka shared with VGC that as of now, there are no concrete plans for this. But remember, the future is always uncertain.
During the Game Boy Advance era, Sonic the Hedgehog, once a formidable rival to Nintendo, emerged as an unexpected hero. As Sega declared its transition into a third-party publisher in 2001, it marked a shift for Sonic, who would now appear on Nintendo’s systems. One of the early games in this new era was “Sonic Advance,” which introduced a fresh, side-scrolling adventure starring our blue speedster. The game proved to be a significant commercial hit, spawning two follow-ups.
Apart from being commercially successful, the Sonic Advance series was also highly appreciated by both critics and fans. Notably, these games introduced the character Cream, who has since become a regular figure in the Sonic universe. You can find her in IDW comics, the Sonic X animated series, as well as in games like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. In essence, there are numerous reasons why it would be great to re-release these games!
