As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that Capcom’s latest offering, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, has left me utterly astounded and pleasantly surprised. After the dismal turn of events following MvC: Infinite and the delisting of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 from digital storefronts, I had all but given up hope on this iconic fighting game series. But lo and behold, here we are!
The “Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics” is a game that I can’t believe exists, given the tough times Marvel vs. Capcom fans have experienced over the past decade. The disappointing release of “MvC: Infinite” and the removal of “Marvel vs. Capcom 2” from digital stores made it seem like Capcom’s legendary fighting game series was on its way out. However, the franchise has been resurrected in a way that could make it even more significant than before.
After having spent time with all seven titles in the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, I’m surprised by how great each still feels to play. From X-Men: Children of the Atom through Marvel vs. Capcom 2, every game included here is still incredibly fun and offers a top-tier fighting game experience. The odd inclusion of the bunch, 1993’s The Punisher beat ’em up, is still quite enjoyable in its own right, especially given how sparse brawlers are nowadays.
As a gamer, I’ve been diving into the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, where you can battle it out with friends on your couch or take it online. To my delight, the online matches ran smoothly without any hitches, making me feel like I was playing side by side with someone locally, even though we were miles apart. Granted, finding opponents wasn’t always easy during the pre-release phase, but I believe that will change as more people start getting their hands on this game. Kudos to Capcom for implementing rollback netcode in this collection – it made my online gaming experience effortlessly enjoyable.
Beyond the online aspect, practice mode is another significant feature included in every game within the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection. This addition might seem simple, but it’s crucial, especially for attracting new fans. With these games being relatively old, there are undoubtedly countless players who are already well-versed in each title’s intricacies. Including practice mode allows veterans to refine their skills even more, and it aids novice players in grasping the workings of each game’s systems and mechanics before diving into matches against others. I found this feature particularly useful, and I’m glad Capcom took the initiative to incorporate it.
One intriguing feature of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection that stands out is its abundance of bonus content. In my experience with similar collections, I usually find the extra features disappointing. However, this isn’t the case for MvC Fighting Collection, which is brimming with over 300 pieces of vintage concept art, design documents, and other materials from Capcom’s development process in the 90s. Such documentation is rarely made public, and it’s surprising that some of these items haven’t been lost over the past few decades. Although these aren’t the primary reasons to buy the game, they make a wonderful addition for those keen on Capcom’s history.
If there is a downside to this Marvel vs. Capcom collection, it would be that there is little reason to go back and revisit some of these games. Most of Capcom’s Marvel fighting games of the 90s progressively built upon one another until they eventually culminated in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which is by far the best entry of the bunch. As a result, going back to some of the precursors of MvC2 can feel a bit stale by comparison. Still, this is hardly a negative aspect of the collection as I’m happy to see Capcom include all of these titles for no other reason than game preservation.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics delivers on its basic promise quite impressively. Each game in this compilation is top-notch, and it’s evident that Capcom has done an excellent job during the porting process, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Add to that some additional bonus features, and Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection becomes as captivating for its historical significance as it is for fun multiplayer sessions. Whether you’re a newbie or an old-timer in the Marvel vs. Capcom universe, this collection represents a great value and hopefully marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in the series.
