DC Turns a Batman Character Into a New Green Lantern

As a longtime fan of DC comics, I must say that the current “DC vs. Vampires: World War V” series is nothing short of captivating! The storytelling is top-notch, with each issue delivering twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seat.

In the alternate reality story “DC vs. Vampires“, a perpetual darkness enveloped the DC Universe. This 12-issue Elseworlds narrative – penned by James Tynion IV (Batman), Matthew Rosenberg (Task Force Z), and Otto Schmidt (Green Arrow) – unfolds on Earth 63, a world overrun by vampires. Here, Dick Grayson, now the ruler of all vampires, transformed Barbara Gordon into his vampire queen. Following the demise of Batman and most of the Bat-Family, a blood-turned vampire Damian Wayne joined the human rebellion against Queen Gordon, also known as the Daughter Born of Blood, Mother of All Vampires, and Sovereign of the Seven Continents. However, the night is at its darkest just before dawn – and in the brightest day, in the blackest night, no evil shall elude the Green Lantern‘s beacon of light.

Damian’s mom, Talia al Ghul, is hiding in a secret League of Shadows base along with Alfred Pennyworth, who promised to protect Bruce Wayne’s deceased son. They are ambushed by Wonder Woman, a goddess believed to be a vampire. However, the Lasso of Truth reveals that Talia doesn’t know where Damian is. Wonder Woman intends to kill both Talia and Alfred to send a threatening message to someone called the Queen Slayer. In response, Alfred locks himself inside a vault filled with artifacts from various parts of the world… and even other planets.

Wonder Woman remarks, “I believe I’ll dismember you, much like how you treated Hal Jordan, the one who turned me into a vampire.” This was a reference to Alfred beheading Jordan’s Green Lantern ring-bearing hand using a yellow-painted axe in DC vs. Vampires issue 6. In the storyline, Hal Jordan was eventually killed by Oliver Queen, and his fellow Green Lanterns – Kyle Rayner and John Stewart – were ambushed and slain upon their return to Earth in DC vs. Vampires: World War V issue 1.

In the latest instalment of “DC vs. Vampires: World War V,” Alfred delves into the vault, retrieving the elusive Power Ring that once belonged to Stewart, lost during his demise. As he grasps the artifact, he declares, “You’ve been summoning me all along.” Previously unwilling to respond, Alfred now acknowledges, “I am ready to answer your call.”

DC vs. Vampires: World War V #2 is currently available from DC Comics, and the saga continues with issue #3 on October 9th.
